Subject: Joint ITU-T/IEEE Workshop on “Next Generation Optical Access Systems”, Geneva, 19-20 June 2008

Dear Sir/Madam, 1 I would like to inform you that the joint ITU-T and IEEE workshop on “Next Generation Optical Access Systems” will take place at ITU headquarters, Geneva, from 19-20 June 2008. The workshop is the third in partnership with IEEE and follows the Kaleidoscope event in May and the workshop on Carrier-class Ethernet held from 31 May to 1 June 2007. The event will open at 1400 hours. Detailed information concerning the meeting room will be displayed on screens at the entrances to ITU headquarters. Registration will open at 1000 hours at the ITU Montbrillant building. 2 Discussions will be held in English only. 3 Participation is open to ITU Member States, Sector Members and Associates and to any individual from a country which is a member of ITU who wishes to contribute to the work. This includes individuals who are also members of international, regional and national organizations. The event is free of charge but no fellowships will be granted. 4 The event will review the work areas within ITU-T and IEEE 802.3 on the development of broadband optical access network standards. The relevant standards groups are ITU-T Q2/15 on optical access network systems and IEEE P802.3av Task Force on 10Gb/s PHY for EPON. This workshop will cover the network evolution scenario, service requirements, the transport mechanism and the physical layer for next generation optical access systems. The event will focus on the opportunities for further collaboration in the development of optical access network system standards.

In this context, session topics will include:  Emerging services heavily dependent on bandwidth availability and Operators’ deployment experiences and future plans;  Service and OAM requirements for next-generation optical-access including evolution scenarios and power saving mechanisms;  Physical layer requirements for next generation optical access including optical power budgets and wavelength plans;  Transmission mechanisms of optical access including a comparison of the ITU-T and IEEE studies;  Interplay between optical access technologies and solutions developed for other markets (lasers, receivers, etc.);  Alternative technologies and vendors’ solutions. 5 A draft programme of the event is set out in Annex 1 hereto. 6 Information relating to the event will be available on the ITU-T website at the following address: http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/worksem/ngoas/index.html. 7 Wireless LAN facilities are available for use by delegates in the ITU main conference room areas. Wired network access continues to be available in the ITU Montbrillant building. Detailed information is available on the ITU-T website (http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/edh/faqs-support.html). 8 For your convenience, a hotel confirmation form is enclosed as Annex 2 (see http://www.itu.int/travel/ for the list of hotels). 9 Registration for this event will be carried out exclusively online at the following URL: http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/worksem/ngoas/index.html. Deadline for registration is 10 June 2008. 10 We would remind you that citizens of some countries are required to obtain a visa in order to enter and spend time in Switzerland. Where this is the case, the visa must be requested and obtained from the office (embassy or consulate) representing Switzerland in your country or, if there is no such office in your country, from the one that is closest to the country of departure. If problems are encountered by ITU Member States, Sector Members or Associates, and at the official request made by them to TSB, ITU can approach the competent Swiss authorities in order to facilitate delivery of the visa. Visa requests should in such cases be made by official letter from the administration or company you represent. This letter must specify your name, function and date of birth, as well as the number and dates of issue and expiry of your passport. It must be accompanied by a photocopy of the personal details pages of your passport and by the completed registration form and must be sent to TSB by fax (+41 22 730 5853) or e-mail message ([email protected]), bearing the words “visa request”. Please note that ITU needs at least one week to process the various documents required for the delivery of a visa. Please also note that ITU can assist only representatives of ITU Member States, ITU Sector Members or ITU Associates.

Yours faithfully,

Malcolm Johnson Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau
