Jane Falkland was held in a gaol before being taken to Portsmouth where the American-built hired convict transport 'WANSTEAD' was preparing to sail for Australia with convict passengers. The ship was a very small ship - only 253 tons - owned and operated by her Master Captain Henry Moore. She was built in 1811 in Newbury Point. There is no record of a Surgeon on board the 1813 voyage.

Her two decks were sheathed in copper, fastened with copper bolts. She sailed from Spithead, England, on 24 August 1813 with 120 female prisoners and arrived in Sydney with 117 of them 138 days later. Two of the female convicts died on the way out and one was re-landed. As a bark, 258 tons, with 12 Guns, with 21 men serving aboard her, she was built in 1811 on the River Thames. Her Commander was Henry Moore, registered in London, she sailed 9th January 1814 from Plymouth, with 119 female convicts aboard, sailing via Tenerife, Rio and the Cape of Good Hope, landing in Sydney Cove with 117 female passengers aboard, two having died on the long sea voyage. Along with the convicts on the Wanstead she also carried; (and it appears to me that if the ladies of the Wanstead had access to the cargo hold, their trip would not have been so tedious !) 224 gallons of Rum, 112 gallons of Gin, 2 trucks of boots and shoes, 4 hogs of beer, 26 packets of cheese and butter, 3 packets of glasses and earthen ware, 3 packets of loaf sugar, 3 boxes sadlery, 1 case of hats, 1 case of stationary, 1 bale of slops, 2 bags of corks, 6 tierces of bottled porter, 1 parcel haberdashery, 1 box of cutlery, 3 crates of tinware and 1 bale kerseymeres The 119 women on the "WANSTEAD" ranged in age from 17 to 55, the majority being under 40. Half had been convicted in the predominantly urban areas of London, Middlesex and Lancaster, the remainder where sprinkled among the other counties of England with four from Scotland. More than half had received sentences of 7 years transportation and about a quarter each of 14 years and life. Their occupations provided an interesting insight into the working lives of women of the period. Like Sarah, many described themselves simply as a "servant". Others included: nursemaid, chambermaid, housemaid, lady's maid, housekeeper, cook and laundress. One was a "country worker", another was a "barrow woman", and another gave her occupation as "hard work". A minority were skilled in such trades as: cotton spinner, wool spinner, mantua maker, weaver, dressmaker, straw worker, needle worker, boot closer, doormat maker, cloth manufacturer. One girl was a "stage player", and an older woman a baker. No account of the behaviour of any of the women survives. Female convicts were generally regarded as being, for the most part, rowdy, vulgar and depraved. This was certainly true of some of them; but it is more likely that a boisterous minority created this impression. Probably a greater proportion, perceiving that good behaviour was in the own interests, passed unnoticed. Often "good behaviour" meant compliantly bestowing their favours on their male masters. On female convict ships at this time it was a common practice for the ship's officers and crew to take sexual partners from among the women for the duration of the voyage. It would be extraordinary if this form of exploitation did not take place on board the "WANSTEAD", especially as she carried no official or navy surgeon who might have frowned on the practice

Generation No. 2

2. ELIZABETH JANE2 SMITH (JOHN1) was born 16 Oct 1813 in Liverpool NSW V18174286 1B/1817, and died 29 Nov 1837 in Liverpool NSW. She married JAMES ANLEZARK 18 Jun 1830 in St. Lukes Liverpool NSW 4766 V 3B, son of THOMAS ANDLEZARK and ANN STORMER. He was born 03 Feb 1806 in Liverpool, NSW, and died 24 Dec 1874 in Castle Hill, NSW.

Notes for JAMES ANLEZARK: Born in the Colony, 2 February 1808; son of Thomas Anlezark (b c1770 at Chorley Duxbury, England; arrived "Perseus" 4 August 1802, d 3 April 1834, Liverpool, NSW) and Ann Starmer (b c1767, arrived "Experiment" 24 June 1804, d 30 October 1825, Liverpool, NSW).

James married at St Luke's C of E, Liverpool on 18 January 1830 to Elizabeth Jane Smith (b Liverpool 10 October 1817). Elizabeth Jane Anlezark died, aged 22, on 29 November 1837 and was buried on the following day (V1837 2714 21).

A James Anlezark, widower, married Matilda Hawthorn at St Luke's C of E, Liverpool on 3 February 1838 (V1838 1852 22). The NSW Insolvency Index 1842-1887 held by State Records has two entries for James Anlezark: (a) "Late Innkeeper, Liverpool, Sequestration 13 July 1843, File 806, Certificate ER 3 April 1844" and (b) "Innkeeper, Campbelltown Road near Liverpool, Sequestration 8 April 1847, File 1613, Certificate 28 July 1847". It seems, therefore, that although he was twice declared insolvent during the economically difficult 1840s he managed relatively quickly on each occasion to obtain a certificate of discharge from bankruptcy.

James died at Parramatta on 24 December 1874 (Registration No.7277); Matilda Anlezark died at North Parramatta in 1880, aged 59 (No.9307). Note: shown in the 1828 Census as Andlezack. R. v. Anzelark, Riley, Pearce and Pearce [1838] NSWSupC 82 Supreme Court of New South Wales Dowling C.J., 6 August 1838 Source: Sydney Herald, 8 August, 1838[1]

Monday, August 6. - Before Chief Justice and a Civil Jury.

James Anlezark, publican, and Christopher Riley, William Pearce, and Stephen Pearce, yeomen, were indicted for that they and divers other persons to the Attorney General unknown, did unlawfully, riotously, and routously assembling together at Liverpool, on the 2nd of June, with the intention of disturbing the public peace, and then and there did assault and beat James Brooks, Patrick Lockett, Ellen Locket, and Edward Hancock, so that their lives were despaired of; to the great terror and alarm of the liege subjects, in contempt of the laws of our lady the Queen, and to the evil example of all others in the like case offending. The defendants are all inhabitants of the town of Liverpool, and with the exception of Riley, are natives of the Colony. Brooks, Locket, and Hancock, soldiers of the 80th Regiment, and Ellen, the wife of Locket, deposed that they had been to a public house in the town and were returning to their barracks about a quarter past 7 o'clock in the evening of Whit-monday, when they met a mob of people among whom were the defendants, near the barrack-gate. As they approached, Anlezark said "any thing red will do, let's give it them --- soldiers and soldier's trull," upon which one of the mob struck Locket and Brooks with a paling, and Stephen Pearce struck Ellen Locket a violent blow on the head with a paling which knocked her down. They retreated to the barracks as fast as they could, but not before they received several other blows from the mob. The defence was that the row was caused by the military themselves, and that neither Anlezark nor Riley were there. Several witnesses were called to prove the alibi for Anlezark, who swore that he was in his own house when the row began, and merely went to the spot when it was just finished, and one of them swore that there were from twelve to fifteen soldiers present. For Riley, it was sworn that he was in Sydney that day, only arrived by the coach in the evening, and did not leave his house until the riot was over. His Honor told the Jury that if three or more persons assemble together for the purpose of breaking the peace and an assault is committed it is a riot in law, and when parties are proved to be acting in concert they are all equally guilty whether they actually commit any assault or not. In this case there could be no doubt that there had been a riot - the only question of the Jury was, who were the guilty parties. The Jury, after an hour's absence, returned a verdict of guilty against Anlezark, Stephen Pearce, and Wm. Pearce, Riley not guilty. Anlezark was recommended to mercy on the ground of his not having committed any actual assault. The defendants were admitted to bail to appear for judgment on the first day of term (September 15).
