The Boonesborough settlement was named for South 28 Carolina Colonial Governor Thomas Boone. The log cabin is the 29 oldest existing building in Abbeville County; and 30 31 Whereas, the cabin was first built by Henry Templeton, one of 32 Boonesborough’s first settlers, and is sixteen by twenty-two feet. 33 In 1993, the then current owner had the cabin dismantled and took 34 the logs to Cleveland, Georgia. Six years later, he donated the 35 cabin to the Boonesborough Township Historical Society and it 36 was moved back to South Carolina; and 37 38 Whereas, restoring the cabin was a dream of the late Jane 39 Elizabeth “Betty” Byrd Griffith Wilson. As a member of the 40 Boonesborough Township Historical Society, she shared a vision 41 with the other members of reconstructing, from the original

The cabin will be dedicated in Jane Byrd 2 Wilson’s honor at a ceremony on Saturday, April 30, 2005; and 3 4 Whereas, the Templeton-Drake log cabin is thought to be the sole 5 physical remnant of the historic Boonesborough Township on 6 America’s frontier, and it provides a living history site on the 7 Discovery Tour of the National Heritage Corridor; and 8 9 Whereas, the Boonesborough Township Historical Society was 10 founded in 1991 and its mission is to promote the cultural 11 preservation of upper Abbeville and lower Anderson Counties. It 12 serves the towns of Donalds, Due West, Honea Path, Ware Shoals, 13 and other parts of Abbeville and Anderson Counties; and 14 15 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this 16 resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate the 17 officers, members, and friends of the Boonesborough Township 18 Historical Society upon the completion of this important 19 restoration which will help educate South Carolinians on American 20 frontier life and the culture of some of our State’s earliest settlers. 21 Now, therefore, 22 23 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 24 concurring: 25 26 That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the 27 Boonesborough Township Historical Society upon the completion 28 of the restoration of the Templeton-Drake log cabin in Donalds, 29 South Carolina, and commend the members of the society for their 30 important work in preserving the heritage of Abbeville And 31 Anderson Counties. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 34 Mr. Jim Pinson, President of Boonesborough Township Historical 35 Society. 36 ----XX---- 37
