THE DIFFERENTIATING INSTRUCTION TOOLKIT
This toolkit is intended to provide a basic foundation of, and a springboard for, district/complex efforts in supporting standards-based education through differentiating instruction. It consists of fourteen training modules organized into four volumes which include overhead transparencies, facilitator’s guides, handouts, optional materials, bibliographies, selected resources, and two duplicate CD-ROMs with files of all the materials found in the four binders.
The “Overview of Differentiating Instruction” module is referenced by all other modules and offers a framework for looking at differentiating instruction. It is intended that presenters/trainers use the materials very flexibly to meet their needs and the needs of their audiences. The modules can easily be expanded when lessons are shared or created by teachers, or they can be condensed when sampling the various strategies. The knowledge, skills, and creativity of the presenters will truly make the modules “come alive” for audiences.
A future component of the toolkit will be video clips of visits into Hawaii’s classrooms where differentiated instruction is supporting students in our standards-based system. When available, video tapes/clips can effectively be used to illustrate ideas and enhance presentations for diverse audiences.
Suggestions, samples, corrections, etc., are appreciated as the State team looks ahead to improving and expanding the modules. We hope you will share, with us and other trainers, additional resources you find useful. Please direct all inquiries/comments to Carolyn Hamada, Educational Specialist, Special Education Services Branch, Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Support via Lotus Notes, or phone (808) 733-4832, or FAX (808) 735-6228.
