Course Description
The focus of Analytic Geometry on the coordinate plane is organized into 6 critical areas. Transformations on the coordinate plane provide opportunities for the formal study of congruence and similarity. The study of similarity leads to an understanding of right triangle trigonometry and connects to quadratics through Pythagorean relationships. The study of circles uses similarity and congruence to develop basic theorems relating circles and lines. The need for extending the set of rational numbers arises and real and complex numbers are introduced so that all quadratic equations can be solved. Quadratic expressions, equations, and functions are developed; comparing their characteristics and behavior to those of linear and exponential relationships from Coordinate Algebra. Circles return with their quadratic algebraic representations on the coordinate plane. The link between probability and data is explored through conditional probability. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS STUDENT PROGRESS Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook. HOMEWORK Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB. MAKE-UP WORK When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by DUE TO ABSENCES Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA. SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS CLASSROOM Classroom Rules & Behavior EXPECTATIONS In addition to the school rules, the following rules will also apply in the classroom Each student is expected to keep an organized notebook for notes, assignments, and returned work. Students must be seated and working on the bell ringer before the tardy bell rings. Students must bring their math notebooks, textbooks, scientific calculators, workbooks, paper and pencils to class every day. Homework will provide reinforcement, practice, and follow-up to class content. See the MISSED WORK POLICY for information on making up missed work. To receive full credit for an assignment, you are expected to attempt all problems, show your work and be able to explain your thinking. Follow directions the first time they are given. Be respectful of yourself and others. Active participation is part of learning and is an expectation of this class. Electronic devices are only to be visible if they are being used for academic purposes and only when the teacher asks you to use them. The teacher reserves the right to confiscate any device that causes a distraction to learning in the classroom. No food or drinks, other than water, area permitted in the classroom. Water is allowed. TECHNOLOGY USE: School technology, such as iPads, Chromebooks, and laptops, will be handled carefully, returned to correct location on cart, and plugged in. Technology will only be used for the assigned work. All students are expected to adhere to the honor code. CHEATING will not be tolerated. Students involved in cheating will not receive credit for that assignment and parents will be contacted. Students are to follow Class Rules and Norms at all times.
Homework Expectations: Homework assignments are given to reinforce, review, prepare for, or enhance what is taught in the classroom. It is expected that when homework is assigned, it will be done to the best of the student’s abilities and turned in on time.
MISSING WORK POLICY When a student is missing an assignment from a mathematics class, the student has the responsibility to initiate the retrieval and submission of the missed classwork and/or homework assignment(s) within a maximum of five (5) school days of the assigned date. Under this policy, any attempted work submitted within the five-day period will receive a maximum grade of 70%.
MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES A. 2-3 inch, 3-ring notebook B. A SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR is MANDATORY (TI 30XS, Casio FX300, or similar). A GRAPHING CALCULATOR is Highly Recommended for this course. Listed below are available versions of graphing calculators. They help facilitate computation and visual analysis of graphs, which is a topic that is covered in depth during this course. Casio FX9860G, Casio CFX-9850GCPlus, Casio FX – 9750GPlus, TI 83, TI 83+, or TI 84+. C. Graph paper (4 x 4) D. Dividers (9 total) E. Composition or Spiral-Bound Notebook F. Pencils and college-ruled, loose-leaf notebook paper G. A compass and a protractor H. Tissues I. 4 AA Batteries (for graphing calculator use) J. Expo Markers K. Highlighters EXTRA HELP Tutorial is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 pm – 3:45 pm. Students must arrive promptly (by 3:20pm, which is the cut-off) and must be prepared with questions. These questions should be regarding problems that have been attempted, but not mastered. The questions should also reflect some attempt of note-taking, practice, or engagement of the topic. Students attending tutorials without having prepared questions will be asked to leave and attend the next session when the proper preparation has been done. Students who have missed class must first copy the notes from a student who was in class, read over the section(s) missed in the text, and consult with a classmate regarding practice problems done in class. Once this has been done, with evidence, the student may come to tutorial to ask additional questions for clarification.
Tutorial may have to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances, and the teacher will notify the students when this is necessary.
The ultimate goal of tutorial is reinforcing concepts in a timely manner so that all students in tutorial may have their questions/problems addressed. When students are not adequately prepared for tutorial, valuable time is wasted by searching for topics and sections to cover.
PARENTS AS PARTNERS It is most important that parents support their child's education. This support fosters increased student achievement. In an effort to bring continuity to parental involvement, the School Improvement has made one of its primary goals that of ensuring that strategies are in place to build a cohesive and effective partnership with all stakeholders to support academic achievement.
To accomplish and foster this goal, continuous parenting classes are offered to the parents through each of the district's parent resource centers [http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/parent-resource-centers]. Moreover, to build the bridge of partnership between home and community, parent resource centers [http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/parent-resource-centers] advisory council has been established. Annual, title I county-wide parental involvement conferences and college financial aid workshops are held in the fall and spring of every school year.
