Guest Speaker – David Rozelle from the Gift of Life Michigan organization spoke at the January 13 membership meeting. The Gift of Life Michigan is a non-profit organization that handles the organ donation within the state. Dr. Rozelle was able to share with our members his personal story of receiving a heart transplant. He explained how most family members are unsure about organ donation when a loved one dies because they aren’t sure if that is what the loved one wanted. He told us about an electronic database that the organization runs and the University Challenge Program. Only 12% of Michigan residents are registered with gift of life, however other states in the region have registered around 60%. Our responsibility in the Univeristy Challenge would be to register as many people as possible through February. Universities/Colleges with the highest % of enrollment registered or highest number registered win. Website: thegiftoflifemichigan.org. Our discussion with Dr. Rozelle linked with the honors topic: Gold, Gods, and Glory-Global Dynamics of Power. He explained how in most countries transplant surgeries are not a possibility, as they can only be done in highly advanced medical centers. Although it seems that the procedure is available to whoever is the sickest within the U.S. (regardless of their capability to pay), Dr. Rozelle explained that the post-procedure medications cost about 25K/year.
