WELLNESS CENTER COORDINATOR 1 MIRACOSTA COLLEGE

CLASS TITLE: WELLNESS CENTER COORDINATOR

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Dean of Career and Technical Education or their designee, coordinate and oversee functions of the Wellness Center. Assist in the Development and monitoring of budgets and supervise all hourly center personnel. Provide reports at request of the dean or designee

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Collaborate with the dean on Wellness Center programming and oversight. Assist in the Development of Wellness Center rules and regulations for faculty and students. [E]

2. Assist students and faculty with use of Wellness Center. [E]

3. Assist faculty in the monitoring of students using Wellness Center equipment to ensure correct form and safety procedures.

4. Assist dean in the coordination, recruitment, selection, hiring, training, evaluation, and scheduling of student workers assigned to the Wellness Center. [E]

5. Assist dean in the coordination of staff meetings, developing policy, setting priorities, solving problems, offering in-service trainings, and ensuring safe operation of the Center. [E]

6. Assure that all equipment is in proper working order and cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.

7. Oversee and maintain student records in computerized databases as necessary and requested by the department chair or dean. [E]

8. Assist dean with the Development of Wellness Center rules and regulations for faculty and students. Monitor Wellness Center personnel to ensure compliance with Wellness Center rules and regulations. [E]

9. Assist department chair with the development and monitoring of budgets and recommend purchases to the department chair and maintain contracts. [E]

10. Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: District organization, operations, policies and objectives. Advanced principles of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and emergency first aid. Free weight lifts, forms, and progression. Prevention, recognition, and first aid treatment of injuries. Role of exercise in preventing the progression of degenerative diseases & medical conditions.

Health related physical fitness and weight loss programs for the general population. Work with physically and mentally challenged individuals. Recordkeeping techniques. School insurance policy. Principles of supervision and Wellness Center program administration. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Applicable sections of the State Education Code. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

ABILITY TO: Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in a variety of procedural situations. follow oral and written directions, policies, and procedures. Operate a variety of office and therapeutic equipment, including computer and appropriate software. Respond appropriately to emergency situations. Screen & defer higher risk individuals to appropriate health care professionals. Teach and demonstrate core conditioning, aerobic and resistance training exercises. Advise individuals on fitness and wellness principles. Understand and apply various technical directions issued by physicians. Manage budgets. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Work independently with little direction. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Meet schedules and timelines. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Work confidentially with discretion. Plan and organize work. Train and provide work direction to others. Work as a member of a team. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education and experience equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or Physiology of Exercise and one year closely related work experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: A valid CPR/ AED certificate. ACSM, NSCA, NCSF, NASM or other nationally recognized fitness certification organizations.

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Associate faculty, student workers and hourly staff.

CONTACTS: Staff, faculty, administrators, students, physicians, parents and guardians, other colleges, trade organizations and vendors and the public.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

MIRACOSTA COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT (E) = Essential job function 9/1/10 WELLNESS CENTER COORDINATOR 3 Frequent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds; ability to work at computer involving keyboard, mouse or other control devices; intermittent light repetitive use of hands, wrists, shoulders and forearms while demonstrating various tasks and processes associated with Wellness Center activities; travel and/or drive to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities; ability to effectively negotiate, mediate and resolve conflicts with and among their contacts; ability to appropriately respond to emergency situations on an as-needed basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily works in an indoor gym/classroom environment; subject to frequent contacts with and interruptions by faculty and students; intermittent exposure to angry and/or verbally aggressive individuals; subject to equipment and chemical hazards, loud noise, dust, lifting and prolonged standing; may be required to work during day and/or evening hours on an as-needed basis.
