BELVEDERE BOWLS CLUB NEWSLETTER

December 2017 Rod Atherton – President

Hello and welcome to the Members and family/s of Belvedere Bowls Club as we draw close to Xmas in 2017, what with Pennant season under way, the forever problems with selection with people dropping out each week is disappointing, I cannot see that if you put your name down for playing bowls for the season that’s for 14 weeks, then you are committed, if you are sick ok, but we have had people pull out every week, this in turn puts pressure on the selection committee, they have to change teams around to try and keep the sides going, so if you lose a skip where do they find one and so one, this in turn upsets the players and the problem snow balls.

Our new green is all put complete with the shade ex screens in place, we only need to purchase some seats and cup holders for the drink fountains and we are finished, the green is running well at about 15, after Xmas Berry bros. will check the green out and see if it needs re-stretching then we can place permanent lines down.

As a club we need the members to support the club in the functions that are run over the year, This is your club so please support it, we have 200 members but where are they. This is the second year for the management committee and the elections are coming up on Sunday 4th June 2018 so how about putting you self up for the new committee and support your club, as you know all the experts know better than the people running the club, so this is your chance, I will not be standing for re- election.

I thank the people that help out at the club on a day to day basis, the working bees on Monday morning and Friday morning, the helpers on pennant days, the bar people, and the committees .

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year, also to the people that are and have been sick a quick recovery.

SYNTHETIC GREEN REPLACEMENT

With the opening of the new synthetic green in June 2017 the Board recognises that the surface of the green does not last forever. The expected life of the synthetic surface is forecast to be between 10 and 15 years with an estimated replacement cost of about $200,000. The Board considers it responsible to provide for the cost of replacement over the life of the green and decided to use 12 years as the life expectancy. This means that $1,400 per month will need to be put aside. The Club currently has $21,890 in a Term Deposit account which will be earmarked for the initial input for the green replacement. This will cover the necessary funds required til September 2018 with $1,400 per month being put aside from October 2018 and being added to the Term Deposit on a regular basis. Ken Fulton - Chairman Selectors Saturday Pennant

Hi bowlers, firstly I would like to thank everyone who has committed to playing Saturday Pennant and all the Members who have volunteered to fill in and play in response to my desperate phone calls for help. Your selection panel have been frustrated and exasperated by the growing list of unavailable bowlers week in, week out. The Club have had an extraordinary number of sick or injured bowlers but if you commit to play Pennant then the Club enters enough teams to allow all Members to get a game of Pennant. A number of our Members have let their friends, team mates and Belvedere Bowls Club down by being unavailable on a regular basis, book holidays in the off season, don’t go to a grandchild’s birthday Saturday afternoon (go visit Saturday night). I ask all of you to make yourself available for the rest of the season because if you don’t we will have to withdraw one or possibly two teams Sides 7 and 8 which result in fines for the Club as does forfeiting. Please think twice about placing your name on the unavailable list if you can help by committing to Pennant, ring me Ken 0409936421. One more negative is the number of nonelected selectors and compulsive wingers who love to give their opinion regarding selection weekly. Selectors are privy to all the information and have the elected responsibility to make decisions Re: players, teams, surface, final qualification etc. Please allow us to do our job. Now the good, Sides 1 and 2 as well as Sides 4,5,and 7 have an opportunity to play finals which has been a great effort under extreme pressure. These teams need to keep winning so remember encourage anyone playing in these teams. Prior to the season starting a huge number of members indicated they wanted Wednesday practice and drills these numbers have dropped off but if we want to play finals we must practice. We know that the “scoring system” hasn’t been fully supported but request that you continue to score each game. Finally I suggest everyone finds their “Game Plan” paperwork and re-read it over the Christmas break. If you need another copy ask a Selector.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Macca – Chairman Midweek Pennant Selection

Mid week Pennant is performing well, with 3 sides in or almost in the 4 teams 1, 2 and 5 are either 4 or 5 on the ladder. With a couple of wins we can set ourselves for finals as the season winds down.

Macca

Due the health issues with my wife I have resigned from the position of Match Committee and as Chairman of same committee.

We have still not seen any more than around 14 players of a Wednesday, even to the point of cancelling the sponsored day for Wed 29, due to lack of interest.
