Eddie Carbone works on the New York docks. He and his wife, ______, have been looking after ______, Beatrice’s niece, since her mother died. Catherine is now 17, and Eddie is still very protective of her, warning her about being too friendly and too trusting. Beatrice thinks he should give Catherine more ______.

Eddie has helped ______and ______, Beatrice’s Italian cousins, come into America, illegally, to find work. Catherine is attracted to Rodolpho, but Eddie disapproves. He tries to keep them apart and warns Catherine that Rodolpho is just using her because if he marries her he can apply to become an American ______and live legally in America. Eddie also suggests that Rodolpho is ______: he sings, can cook, and sew.

Catherine is upset because Eddie is ______about her relationship with Rodolpho, and can’t understand him. She is torn between her love and respect for Eddie and her feelings for Rodolpho. Beatrice encourages Catherine to stand up to Eddie; she has realised that Eddie’s feelings for Catherine are more than those an uncle has for a ______or a father has for a ______.

At Christmas, Eddie comes home early and he is ______. He finds Catherine and Rodolpho together and is very angry. He first kisses Rodolpho and then kisses Catherine. He orders Rodolpho to leave. Catherine is ______and upset.

Eddie goes to Mr Alfieri again, and again is told there is no legal solution: the only ______that has been broken is the ______law (because Marco and Rodolpho came into the country without the proper permission). Eddie is so desperate to stop the marriage he telephones the immigration police and reports Marco and Rodolpho.

When Eddie gets home, he finds out that there are some new (illegal) arrivals from Italy also hiding in a neighbour’s flat. He is worried about what will happen to them if the police come, but before he can do anything about it, the immigration officers arrive and ______Marco, Rodolpho and the other two immigrants. Everyone guesses that Eddie was responsible, and has gone against the community’s strong belief that you must be completely ______to your family. As they are being taken away, Marco accuses Eddie of betraying them, in front of everyone, and all the neighbours turn away from Eddie and reject him.

In prison, Mr Alfieri offers to arrange bail so that Marco and Rodolpho can come out until the ______. It is certain that they will be sent back to Italy after that, but they hope that if Rodolpho and Catherine get married, Rodolpho at least might be able to stay in America. Mr Alfieri tries to make Marco promise not to go after Eddie if he is let out on bail.

As Bea and Catherine prepare to go to the ______, Rodolpho comes to the apartment to warn Eddie that Marco is out on bail and coming to get him. Beatrice asks Eddie not to fight with Marco, but when Marco arrives Eddie calls him a ______. They fight, and Eddie pulls out a ______. In the struggle he is stabbed and he dies in Bea’s arms.
