Course Description Basing on selected theories and best practices, this course aims to help students strengthen their knowledge and skills in developing teaching materials onto a set of ideal textbook for Mandarin Chinese learners (at a given level in K-16). Students are expected to pay attention to structural template and componential contents that are age-appropriate, proficiency level-appropriate in materials developments, from listing a selection of themes and what language elements should be ideally taught based on experts’ feedback. All developed materials are encouraged to create in compliance with the U.S. National Foreign Language Standards and California State-approved World Language Content Framework (your own state framework if you registered from other state in the U.S.).

Student semester projects are expected to put theories into practices (e.g., from Backward Design -- Understanding by Design, UbD -- by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, 2005) for creation of teaching plans, activity designs, and for evaluation of students’ language learning outcome. By the end of this semester, students are expected to have made substantial and incremental progress in their production in systematic, practical, engaging ways to stimulate a target learner’s outgrowth of learning.
