USD#416 Endowment Scholarship

Applications must be received by the endowment association committee by March 30th.

An award of up to $1000.00 will be dispersed to one or more recipients after eight weeks of attendance at your school or the award can be made to the school of your choice anytime after enrollment. As of 2008 there were 15 different scholarships to be awarded. All endowment scholarships will have equal parts of the following criteria: grades, ACT college entrance exam scores, financial need, and character (which would include activities and leadership). The only exceptions would be those that had specific criteria prescribed by individual donors. Examples would be the Lois Jackson scholarship which is for education majors, the Flaigle family scholarship, which prefers, but does not require, nursing or education majors, and the Blair family scholarship, which emphasizes financial need. Blair Family Scholarship The Blair Family Scholarship honors the matriarch of the Blair Family. Mrs. Golda Blair was a lifelong Louisburg resident. Her children JT, Connie, Barb and Mary have donated this perpetual scholarship in her honor. Mrs. Blair, or Goldie, as she was known had only an eighth grade education. Knowing this, she worked very hard for everything she had, and realized that education was very important. She began the Blair House Restaurant in Louisburg. The Blair House became an institution in Louisburg, the home of many good times and conversation. The restaurant was known throughout the eastern half of Kansas as the place to eat in Louisburg. Goldie learned that a good education was the key to a young persons future. It is with this thought in mind that, upon her passing several years ago, her children set up this perpetual scholarship.

Dennis/Hill Family Scholarship Damon and Karla Dennis moved to Louisburg in 1992 and established a chiropractic office. Andrew and Megan Hill moved to Louisburg in 1996 and established an optometry office. The Dennis and Hill families became the best of friends over the last 10 years. Both families feel that education is the cornerstone of their profession and wish to pass this along with a $1000 scholarship to be given each year in their name to a student planning on pursuing an education in the health field.

Kelly Family Scholarship Charles Gladstone Kelly, son of Dr. John Kelly, graduated from Kansas City School of Law in 1927; passed the Missouri Bar exam and was authorized to practice in the Federal Courts. He helped establish Western Steel Product Company in Paola of which he was president and general manager for 20 years. He then sold out and stayed on with the new corporation as superintendent and general manager until he retired. He served as Miami County Commissioner for 8 years, serving a term as the Kansas County Comm. Assoc.

He married Velma Estelle Barker in 1943. Velma attended Pittsburg State Teachers College now known as PSU. She attended Kansas City Art Institute and did departmental teaching in art and music. Her teaching career included Miami County rural schools as well as city schools of Cullison, Osawatomie and Louisburg, Ks. They had no children.

Charles passed away some 10 years ago now, and Velma is in the Louisburg Care Center with severe Alzheimer's disease. Upon Charles' passing, Velma endowed to USD 416 the necessary funds to have a $1000 scholarship annually.

Murray/Kirkpatrick Scholarship Maxine and Gene Murray attended 12 years schooling at Louisburg and always appreciated the education that they received. Maxine graduated in the class of 1936 and Gene graduated in 1946. During this time their mother and father owned and operated a grocery store in Louisburg. They retired in 1960 and lived most of their lives in Louisburg. The Murray family always thought they should give back to the community that supported them while they were in business and for all their school years. When they went into the cable television business they received the first franchise for Louisburg. They built and operated the system for several years and Gene also operated a television business in Miami County for 25 years.

Maxine and Gene have been working for the past 20 years to improve the USD 416 Endowment Association and help it to grow. At times it had been frustrating and seemed very slow, but progress was being made. In 1996, they felt that they had the means to provide a thousand dollar scholarship. This grew each year until it reached $7500 and this year it will double. They had a lot of help in the early years, from the over 40 alumni association, including Luella Caldwell, Verle Bostick, Art Godfrey, John Gangel, Paul Kircher, and many more. They are happy that a group of young businessmen from Louisburg are stepping forward with new ideas and new energy that will make USD 416 Endowment better. The work of Jim Woods for the Athletic Hall of Fame, Dr. Damon Dennis for organizing the fund raising dinner and other new members that have accepted great responsibilities. These include Craig Holtzen, Bob Nauman, Mark Williams, Dr. Andy Hill, along with excellent cooperation from the High School counselor Tom Lundblad.

Maxine and Gene, along with their families are very proud to provide funds to the USD 416 Endowment Association that will provide a scholarship for many years to come. Richard Chandlee Scholarship Richard Chandlee, known as Dick to his friends, served five years in the Second World War on a heavy cruiser in the South Pacific. Dick later went to St. Louis where he met his wife Lorraine. They moved to Springfield, Mo., where he finished his education at Drury College. While a student, he worked at Hickory Hills Country Club as the caddy master. The job was to be in charge of the caddies. Dick watched the game, learned the rules, and his love of the game began. At 6'3", 225 lbs., his drives were "almost out of sight." He improved at a rapid pace.

He was a longtime member of Metcalf Ridge Golf Course where he frequently shot his age. He had 2 hole in one shots. Dick passed away during the summer of 2005. His family and friends wish for his memory to live on through this scholarship. May the recipients of this scholarship learn to love the game that brought him so much joy.

Rogers Family Scholarship In case some of you didn't know it, the Rogers Family is synonymous with giving in Louisburg, Ks. James and Kathryn Rogers have been longtime residents of Louisburg. Jim was originally born in Louisburg and Kathryn in Paola. Jim was a longtime farmer and Kathryn says he was on every committee and board a person could be on. One such board he was on was the school board for the Spring Valley country school. The Rogers have donated many pieces of ground to important groups and causes: the ground for the new section of the cemetery; ground for the new 1st Christian Church; the sand green golf course, etc. The land that now houses the Burger King, Price Chopper et al was also once Rogers family ground. Upon Jim's passing in 1997, the USD 416 endowment association received the necessary funds for a perpetual scholarship in their name.

Walter Stone Memorial Scholarship Walter Stone grew up in Louisburg Ks. He farmed the same ground his entire life and dedicated himself to the betterment of young people. He was married to his wife Gloria from 1954 until his passing on May 29, 2003. They had four boys; Rick, Steve, Dennis and Greg as well as 13 grandchildren-all living in the Louisburg area.

Walter was a member of the USD 416 school board for 12 years, serving as President for nearly half his tenure. He had a soft spot in his heart for the young people and strived to make a difference in their lives and was very involved in the local recreation association. His wife Gloria has made this scholarship available in his honor.

Western Metal Scholarship Doug Fernell began Western Metal on south Metcalf in 1986. He had been looking for a place to start and grow his business. He was told by a friend in the real estate business about an agent in Louisburg, by the name of Ralph Kueser, that he had the perfect spot for Doug. Doug employs 10 people locally including David Cannon, father of senior Kent Cannon. Doug is married to Kimberly. They have two children. Doug has become very active locally with the Rotary Club. Doug has shown the importance of education to him, his family, and his company by donating this $1000 scholarship. He hopes to make this an annual scholarship to a deserving senior.
