First Grade News January 30, 2015

Language Arts We have finished the third book in our reading series. Next week will be spent reviewing and testing over the skills learned during the third book. There will not be any new sight words or spelling words next week. Enjoy! This would be a great week to practice old sight word cards.

Social Studies We did not get to social studies this week, so we will continue next week with the topic: Who’s in Charge? We will learn about authority figures at home, in school, and in the community.

Math On Friday, we took the Chapter 7 test over comparing two 2-digits numbers. Next week we will begin Chapter 8, learning how to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Vocabulary focus: ones and tens (You can group ones to make tens)

Home Activity: (Additional practice) Using a jar and pennies, work with your child to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Start with 11 pennies in the jar. Have your child add 13 pennies. Ask your child to explain a way to find the sum of 11 and 13. Then count with your child to find how many pennies in all. Repeat with different quantities each day. Work with your child to subtract numbers as well. Science Due to all of the recent snow days and 2 hour delays, we took part of the science test today and will take the rest of it on Monday. Next week in science, we will read and discuss a variety of topics in our "Science Studies Weekly Adventure" magazine. Some of these topics include: Families, Homes, Living Things Grow and Being Healthy.

Other Information Conference forms were sent home this week. Please return them as soon as possible. Report cards were sent home today. If you have any questions, please let us know. Monday will be the last day for the Penny Wars. It was extended due to the snow day on Monday. The Valentine’s Party will be on Thursday, February 12th. More information will be sent home at a later date.

Thanks for your support at home!
