Endangered Species Project
Rationale:
It’s frightening but true: Our planet is now in the midst of its sixth mass extinction of plants and animals — the sixth wave of extinctions in the past half-billion years. We’re currently experiencing the worst spate of species die-offs since the loss of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Although extinction is a natural phenomenon, it occurs at a natural “background” rate of about one to five species per year. Scientists estimate we’re now losing species at 1,000 to 10,000 times the background rate, with literally dozens going extinct every day.
Objective:
- Create a google slides presentation on a specific endangered animal and present this information to your class. - Become an expert in the conservation of animal species and the methods of protecting them against extinction.
Procedure:
1. Choose an endangered species in the world that you would like to research from the list provided. Then, research the following information according to each slides theme. 2. Complete your google slides and prepare a 5-8 minute presentation informing all of your peers of this endangered species.
Length of time:
Each student will complete this individually Three lesson periods plus corresponding homework allocation 1 – 1.5 lessons for class presentations Google slides overview:
Slide 1 – front cover Slide 2 – General intro to the issues of species extinction and endangered list Slide 3 - Basic Information on the Species Slide 4 - Why is this species endangered? Slide 5 - Are there any intrinsic characteristics that this species has that make it more susceptible to extinction? (ex: low reproductive rates, specialist, etc.) Slide 6 –Information about the species in general and why it would be susceptible to becoming extinct Slide 7 - What are the benefits of saving this species? Slide 8 – Are there any negative effects of saving this species? Slide 9 – Are there any laws or ‘acts’ constituted to protecting this specific species? Slide 10 – Citations/Bibliography
