ESCC News

1. The ESCC Executive Director and Board Chair Meeting on September 19 focused on role clarification for the Edmonton Seniors Coordinating Council and the City of Edmonton Seniors Team. Links to the ESCC presentation, City of Edmonton presentation and City of Edmonton Seniors Team Roles are included here. At the meeting both organizations committed to answering questions that were submitted and sharing the information. Review the question and answer document for more information. Note that at the end of the Q & A document is a list of verbatim comments that were collected from table discussions. The comments have not been analyzed yet but the ESCC and City of Edmonton plan to review the comments to see how they inform the work of both organizations. 2. The ESCC Conversation Café and Seasonal Gathering is set for December 1 starting at 10 a.m. at the Santa Maria Goretti Community Centre (11050 - 90 St.). The conversation café will highlight the great work happening in the seniors sector. We invite ESCC member agencies to present brief table talks about initiatives, programs, services or accomplishments you are particularly proud of. NEWS FOR AGENCY STAFF

1. Volunteer Alberta reports that no decision has been made with respect to processes or implementation schedules for mandatory fingerprinting for vulnerable sector checks. Consultations within the law enforcement community are currently underway and will be followed by consultations with other stakeholders including major volunteer agencies. Volunteer Alberta continues to work on this issue at the provincial level and will provide updates as they arise. Read the latest update including a letter from the RCMP.

2. Are you seeking a health-related guest speaker for your group? Check out the updated roster of sessions in the Healthy Aging Information Series. The series features free educational presentations offered by specialists from many fields of expertise. Contact speakers directly to book a presentation. The Age Friendly Edmonton Healthy Aging Working Group which has compiled the list of information sessions asks that you complete a Memorandum of Understanding prior to booking a speaker. The working group will also provide evaluation surveys for participants to provide feedback to improve the information sessions.

3. Consider participating in Giving Tuesday, a national movement to encourage donations and volunteer recruitment for charities and non- profits. It doesn’t cost anything to be involved and provides your organization with exposure. Your logo will appear on the Giving Tuesday website where people across Canada will visit to learn more about participating charities. To participate, organizations must be a registered charity or non-profit and have a specific project in mind. The Giving Tuesday website provides excellent resources to help you run your campaign. This year Giving Tuesday takes place on December 2. Learn more about becoming involved. 4. Volunteer Edmonton is compiling a list of seasonal volunteer opportunities. If you need volunteers for your event or project, email [email protected] with your organization name, website address, phone number and email for volunteer services, title of volunteer positions and date needed.

5. Finding Balance, an annual seniors' falls prevention awareness campaign, runs throughout November across Alberta. Brochures and posters are available and you can download (PDFs) or order printed copies. The Finding Balance website includes many ideas for engaging your community and resources that can be used to educate seniors and their families about falls prevention. The website also has many resources staff in the senior sector will find useful.

EVENTS FOR AGENCY STAFF

1. Check out Volunteer Edmonton’s workshop Engaging Highly Skilled Volunteers on November 18.

2. The Circle of Health is an interactive framework and tool that provides a complete picture of the components of health at a glance and is useful for education, planning, collaboration and evaluation. The Active Living Coalition of Older Adults (in Ontario) used the Circle of Health when they developed their health promotion resources and found it to be very helpful. Three upcoming online workshops will give you the chance to learn more - Using the Circle of Health for Comprehensive Planning (November 18), Using the Circle of Health as an Educational Tool (November 20) and Facilitating with the Circle of Health (November 25). Each 1.5 hour workshop is $65 ($40 for students). For more information and to register, visit www.thequaich.pe.ca/workshops.asp.

3. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Affordable Housing Centre is hosting an Alberta Seniors Web Forum on Advancing Affordable Housing Solutions. The webinar takes place November 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Contact Bernard Cotter for more information at [email protected] or telephone 780-982-5200. 4. The Grant Training Centre presents a Professional Grant Development Workshop on November 20 and 21. Participants in the workshop will learn about the diversity of the funding community, identify potential funding sources, and learn how to write grants and address guidelines of proposals. The workshop takes place at Lister Conference Centre at the University of Alberta. The fee is $535. Learn more in the detailed workshop description.

5. The Injury Prevention Centre hosts the Finding Balance Practitioners Day on December 3 featuring a complimentary breakfast and free presentation by Professor Dawn Skelton, Professor in Ageing and Health from Glasgow Caledonian University. The presentation will provide tips for successfully motivating and increasing physical activity and exercise in older people with a range of functional and health needs and preferences. 6. The next Volunteer Edmonton THINK TANK session will be on December 3. The session will focus on volunteer recognition and runs from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at The Support Network (#400, 10025-106 Street). Register in advance for this free brainstorming session.

7. Help your staff and volunteers improve their cultural competence with a Mather Lifeways Institute on Aging webinar – Build Employee Cultural Sensitivity. The webinar will be held December 3 at 1 p.m. CT. If you can’t participate on that date, you can access the recorded at your convenience. $49.

Top of document WORK OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SENIOR-SERVING SECTOR

1. The Age Friendly Edmonton Information and Communication Working Group is seeking proposals from experienced researchers, community development professionals, and project consultants for Phase 2 of a three phase project to create a comprehensive, cohesive information services system for print and digital materials for older adults in Edmonton. The purpose of Phase 2 is to create a strategic plan that will facilitate the system changes for print and digital information. The project proposes to use a public participation model of decision-making to encourage authentic, functional system change, facilitate user investment (‘buy-in’) and awareness, and improve communication across senior-serving organizations and between those organizations and the seniors they serve. Refer to the Request for Proposals: Roadmap and Strategic Plan for the Improvement of Seniors’ Information Services and Resources (print and digital mediums) in Edmonton for details on proposal requirements. Closing date is November 21.

2. Sage is hiring for a Permanent Part time Outreach/Follow up Coordinator. This position is responsible for providing follow up services to seniors recently discharged from the Sage Safe House program. This includes assessing needs, providing information and support and client advocacy while assisting them in becoming familiar and safe in their new community. The role of outreach includes supporting those individuals who are waiting to come into the Safe House but cannot due to space limitations. The successful candidate will hold a degree or diploma in Social Work. Experience working with older adults and/or victims of abuse is required. The position requires the ability to become registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers and a valid Driver’s License with an ability to transport clients. 1. City Council launched the Council Initiative on Public Engagement to improve how the City of Edmonton works with Edmontonians and to foster greater collaboration and participation in local government. You are invited to take part in a workshop that will lay the groundwork to improve public engagement. Workshops are taking place in November and there are many dates and locations around the city to choose from.

2. Join the Virtual TREK Across Alberta and contribute to reaching the provincial goal of walking 3,263,500 steps or 2610 km. During the month of November log your steps and/or physical activity minutes and add them to the provincial total. More information is available in the TREK passport and at http://albertavirtualtrek.ca/.

3. Participate in a free Heart Health Checkup Research Project identifying Actionable Atrial Fibrillation for those 65 years of age and older. The checkup program is available in a variety of pharmacies across Edmonton during November and December and takes just 15 minutes to measure heart rhythm (ECG), blood pressure, diabetes risk, and heart and stroke risk. No appointment is necessary; just stop by one of the participating pharmacies from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the scheduled dates. Review the brochure to learn more about the program, dates and participating pharmacies.

4. The Provincial Archives of Alberta presents a lecture series called Alberta & the Great War: Personalities & Perspectives. Drawing upon archival holdings, the lectures explore the many ways the First World War affected and changed the province. The next three lectures are November 12: Alberta Women in World War One: A Genius for Organization, November 19: Aboriginal Alberta and the First World War and November 26: Voices of War: The Press, Propaganda and the Personal. All of the lectures begin at 7 p.m. and take place at the Provincial Archives (8555 Roper Road, Edmonton). 5. The Westend Seniors Activity Centre is holding a Get to Know Your Library Days and Book Sale from November 17 to 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Edmonton Public Library will offer a workshop on accessing library resources through the convenience of your home and there will be books and puzzles for sale. Location: 9629 – 176 St. 6. The Edmonton Seniors Centre is hosting a three day Christmas Market from November 19 to 21. Each day from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. you’ll be able to browse through crafts, jewelry, stocking stuffers, floral arrangements, raffles, and more. The Edmonton Seniors Centre is located at 3Y, 11111 Jasper Ave.

7. Happiness is a state of mind. Come laugh and learn a little too at a Happiness at ANY Age presentation. The free half hour presentation takes place November 20 at 12:30 p.m. at the Jewish Senior Citizens’ Centre (10052 - 117 St.). Call 780-488-4241 for more information.

8. The second Creative Movement residency presented by GeriActors will be held at River Ridge Seniors Community (78C McKenney Avenue, St. Albert) on Fridays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. beginning November 21. The four-week residencies led by dancer and choreographer Amber Borotsik are free, all abilities are welcome and no experience is necessary. 10. The Canadian Multicultural Education Foundation presents the Tocho Morocho Multicultural Seniors Arts Festival on November 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. The event showcases the talents of Edmonton’s multicultural seniors and will feature performances, demonstrations and displays of performing and visual arts. The festival is free and takes place at Sage (15 Sir Winston Churchill Square).

11. Find some unique Christmas gifts at the Seniors Outreach Network Society Craft Market and Bake Sale on November 22. Drop by the Inglewood Community Hall (12515 116 Ave) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

12. Attend a free public screening of the film “Spent: Looking for a Change” and a panel discussion on financial inclusion and the real cost of payday lending. The event takes place November 25 at Stanley Milner Library, 7 Sir Winston Churchill Square. Refreshments at 6:30 p.m., film at 7 p.m. and panel discussion 7:45 p.m. 13. The North West Edmonton Seniors Society (12963 - 120 St) presents a Country Blend performance on November 25. 14. The Seniors’ Action and Liaison Team (SALT) is hosting a public meeting on November 25 featuring Nancy Guebert and Isabel Henderson of the Alberta Health Services Continuing Care Resolution Team. The presentation at Sage (15 Sir Winston Churchill Square) which runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. will cover findings from their review of Continuing Care services in Alberta from public comments to the Alberta Health Services Continuing Care Concerns phone line/email account and draft recommendations.

15. Westend Seniors Activity Centre presents Avoiding the Anticipated Christmas Calories on November 26 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. This helpful hints nutrition workshop arms you with useful tips to keep the calorie count down while still partaking in the festival season. 16. SCONA is hosting a dance and hot home-cooked lunch on November 26 at noon. Dance to the music of the 1940s, 50s and 60s as performed by Shirley Blit. Dress for the era just for fun! 25. South East Edmonton Seniors Association (9350 - 82 St.) is hosting two Christmas dinners. Join them on December 10 and 11 for a festive feast featuring turkey and all the fixings. Entertainment provided by SEESA’s own Melody Singers choir. Tickets on sale at the SEESA Front Desk starting December 1. Ticket deadline is December 9 at noon. $12.

27. The North West Edmonton Seniors Society (12963 - 120 St) Christmas dinner will be held on December 12. Central Lions Seniors Association hosts their Christmas Luncheon on December 12 from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. Expect turkey dinner with all the trimmings and entertainment by crooner Bob Jones and 100 Voices Children’s Group. 30. SouthWest Edmonton Seniors Association has planned a Christmas Light Bus Tour on December 15. Tour Candy Cane Lane and stop at the Legislature for free hot chocolate and carol singers. Buses will depart from YECC (10410 19 Ave) and Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre (2051 Leger Road) at 5:45 p.m. and return at 8:15 p.m. Cost: $15 members and $20 non-members. 33. Westend Seniors Activity Centre (9629 - 176 St.) is hosting an Intergenerational Christmas Luncheon on December 16. Old St. Nick drops in to welcome children from Thorncliffe Elementary School and share with them beautiful gifts of warm toques and mittens from the WSAC knitting club. Enjoy a meal of scalloped potatoes, ham, vegetables and warm drinks while enjoying the live music of Tomorrow’s News. Cost $10 members and $12 non-members.

Top of document VOLUNTEER/WORK OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS

1. The Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association (ELLA) is seeking a volunteer to fill the position of Chair of the ELLA Administration Committee. We have a great bunch of Administration Committee volunteers who do much of the work, but we urgently need a Chairperson. Tasks of the Administration Committee include: managing the ELLA office in Enterprise Square, responding to inquiries by telephone, email, letters or in person, maintaining the membership list and assisting with Spring Session registration (data entry, filing, copying). Experience in management and human relations, computer skills and database management would be useful. ELLA Board duties include attending meetings one morning a month from September to June. 2. Mill Woods Seniors Activity Centre (MWSAC) is strategically focused on the future as it expands programs and moves to a new and much larger seniors centre. The centre provides a range of programs and services to meet the recreational, social, health, physical and emotional needs of senior citizens. MWSAC is looking for both seniors and younger individuals from the Mill Woods and the Meadows area to join the Board. The successful candidates will be energetic, work well with others, and be willing to volunteer for 10 – 15 hours a month. Candidates are needed with skills in areas such as accounting, management, law and fundraising. The new board term begins with the February 28, 2015 AGM. 3. Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters (BGCBigs) is looking for volunteers to mentor children and youth in the Edmonton area and we’ve found that seniors make amazing mentors! You can be matched as a big brother or sister and spend 2-4 hours/week with your mentee out in the community, volunteer as an in-school mentor and spend 1 hour/week with your mentee in their classroom, or even work as a volunteer in one of our nine club locations. 4. The TELUS World of Science is seeking volunteers to fill some interesting educational and ambassador roles from October to December. Choose from Gallery Guide and Interpreter, Robotics Lab Attendant, Hospitality Host, School Program Host, IMAX Theatre Usher, Birthday Party Host, Assistant Observatory Attendant and Assistant School Programs Leader. Shifts for these positions are available on weekends, weekdays and evenings.
