Executive Committee Roles and Responsibilities

President-Elect This position requires a 2-year commitment. During the 1st year, the main responsibility involves organizing the annual Symposium. Planning for this spring event begins early in the fall semester, and includes such things as developing a call for proposals, soliciting proposals from graduate students, reviewing the submitted proposals, scheduling the event, and indentifying people to serve as chairs and discussants. This work is more readily accomplished by creating a Symposium Committee that involves other active CRTE members. During the 2nd year, the person in this position moves into the role of President, and fulfills the responsibilities of that role. Responsibilities include setting & facilitating agendas for each meeting, establishing a vision, and sustaining the mission of the CRTE organization.

The position of President-Elect is unique in that it requires a longer commitment than the other positions on the Executive Council. It provides experience in developing and organizing an event not unlike the conferences we will attend as professionals in the field of academia, albeit on a much smaller scale. Such experience not only demonstrates service to the profession, but also is valuable for developing a useful skill set for future service endeavors.

Secretary/Historian The main responsibilities of this role are to document the minutes of each meeting, collect and maintain a binder with all documentation pertaining to CRTE, and to organize the elections for the next committee in the Spring Semester. The Secretary would also contribute to the executive committee by recruiting speakers for presentations, helping to set up monthly meetings, and possibly serving on the Symposium Committee, or as a liaison to one of the departments in the College of Education.

The position of Secretary requires a one-year commitment. It provides experience in maintaining continuity in an organization, and in functioning as the liaison in an organization.

Treasurer The treasurer is responsible for maintaining the budget throughout the academic year. CRTE holds an account at University Federal Credit Union and the treasurer is one of authorized persons (with the president and president-elect) on the account. The duties include collecting and depositing membership dues and symposium fees. The treasurer also purchases and/or reimburses executive committee members for purchases approved by the organization. Good organizational skills are needed to maintain the Excel balance sheet and prepare receipts for membership dues and the symposium. Treasurer duties may also include researching price comparisons for large purchases by the organization. During each executive committee meeting, the treasurer presents an update of the budget and any upcoming expenses.

The position requires a one-year commitment. It provides experience balancing and managing a budget, and honing skills in Microsoft Excel. CRTE 2011

Membership and Communications Chairperson The membership chair is responsible for maintaining current membership records for the academic year. This includes organizing membership information, collecting membership forms and fees, recruiting new members, and answering questions regarding membership. The membership chair also develops connections with departments in the college of education through a membership committee. Department liaisons support the objectives of the membership chair. The responsibilities of the communications chair include maintaining the CRTE membership listserv and executive listserv; making, printing, and posting flyers for upcoming events; emailing event information to department coordinators; and maintaining and updating the CRTE website. As an integrated position, the membership and communication responsibilities can be shared with department liaisons as well.

The position requires a one-year commitment. It provides experience supervising/mentoring a committee, working with technology, and growing a young student organization. The position offers freedom to develop new ideas for recruitment, new ways to collaborate and integrate students from diverse fields in education, and network with other graduate students interested in teacher education.
