 We use the subjunctive in Spanish to express our wishes, preferences, and desires.

 To form the subjunctive: o Find the “yo” form of the present tense. (Look for stem-changing verbs and “go” verbs!) o Drop the ø. o Add opposite endings. o Look out for the five irregulars: ir, ser, dar, estar, saber.

 The following verbs require you to use the subjunctive after them because even though someone wants or insists that something be done, it may or may not happen.

o desear to desire Yo deseo que Eric estudie mucho. o esperar to hope Yo espero que Anna sepa la respuesta. o temer to fear Yo temo que ellas no quieran ir. o tener miedo de to be afraid Yo tengo miedo de que Juan no esté. o preferir to prefer Yo prefiero que Mike venga temprano. o mandar to order Yo mando que ellos hagan la tarea.

 The subjunctive is also used after the following impersonal expressions. o Es importante que… It’s important that… o Es posible que…. It’s possible that… o El probable que…. It’s probable that… o Es improbable que…. It’s improbable that… o Es bueno que…. It’s good that… o Es mejor que…. It’s best that… o Es fácil que…. It’s easy that… o Es difícil que…. It’s difficult that…

 Examples of impersonal expressions and the subjunctive: o Es importante que ellos tengan buenos modales. o Es posible que Jane reciba una nota de 100 en la prueba. o Es necesario que ellos sean corteses.
