Faculty Course Proposal

Faculty Course Proposal The University of Oregon Science Literacy Program aims to improve science literacy of UO non-science majors and to provide opportunities for graduate students to gain experience teaching science courses and undergraduate science students to gain experiential learning about teaching under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Faculty who wish to teach a new course in the Science Literacy Program (SLP) should complete the following course proposal and are encouraged to meet with SLP faculty and staff to discuss their course curriculum and pedagogy ideas. Faculty may be eligible to receive course release for one term of curriculum development. Faculty may also be paired as a mentor with undergraduate SLP scholars who have been awarded an opportunity to participate in the program and/or graduate SLP fellows who wish to have teaching experience to carry out one term of course development and one term of teaching. Faculty participating in the Science Literacy Program are encouraged to attend the Science Literacy Journal Club, special events hosted by the program, and meet with program faculty and staff to discuss classroom pedagogy. Higher priority will be given to proposals from faculty who intend to be active in these programs.

A new course may be offered within a single department or multi-listed (cross-listed) between two departments. Existing courses may also be revised to incorporate evidence-based pedagogy and/or science literacy elements. Higher priority will be given to proposals for courses that are suitable as a course satisfying the general science course (Group >3 satisfying) requirements for UO non-science majors (and if necessary go through the CAS and University course proposal process).
