Career Awareness and Preparation Grade 5

Activity Title: Create Your Own Occupational Trading Card

Purpose: Explore occupations through the development of a trading card which highlights factors that influence career choices such as educational attainment and wages.

Primary Math Integration: Writing Art

Activity: Students explore career choices by first selecting an occupation that interests them using the Occupational Trading Cards. In addition to the trading cards, a list of occupations can be found in the 2007-2008 Pennsylvania Career Guide. After collecting information on the selected occupation, the students design their own trading card that includes pictures, facts, statistics and other important information.

Instructor Role: Occupation should be realistic. Do some research and make sure information for the selected occupation is easily accessible. Review occupational information such as salaries, training/education, and job opportunity with the class.

Suggested Evaluate the accuracy of the research done to develop the card as well as the time and effort in its Assessment: creation. Students should develop a realistic understanding of what is needed (education, ability) to obtain the job.

Career Exploration Grade 5

Activity Title: Discover More About an Occupation of Interest

Purpose: Explore an occupation through researching, interviewing, and writing about a person currently working in that industry.

Primary Writing Integration: Reading

Activity: Students explore career choices by first selecting an occupation that interests them using the Occupational Trading Cards. In addition to the trading cards, a list of occupations can be found in the 2007-2008 Pennsylvania Career Guide. After selecting a specific occupation of interest, the students should interview a person who has that occupation. The student then writes an essay on what they learned from both research and interview; use the Occupation Checklist worksheet as a guide for the research. Include salary, education requirements, future outlook, etc.

Instructor Role: Occupation should be realistic and student should be able to locate an actual person with the occupation. Do some research and make sure information for the selected occupation is easily accessible.

Suggested Evaluate the thoroughness of the interview based on the written essay. Students should develop a Assessment: realistic understanding of the occupation and what is needed (education, ability) to obtain the job.

Career Awareness and Preparation Grade 5

Activity Title: Career Awareness and Mathematics – “Summed Up”

Purpose: Explore the “mathematics” of an occupation through researching salary, job growth/future outlook, length of education/training, etc. Explore the concept of budgeting.

Primary Math Integration: Reading Writing

Activity: Students explore career choices by first selecting about 5 occupations that interest them using the Occupational Trading Cards. In addition to the trading cards, a list of occupations can be found in the 2007-2008 Pennsylvania Career Guide. After selecting about 5 occupations of interest, the students should carefully review the statistical information on the back of the trading cards. The student then completes the worksheet with mathematical questions based on the statistical information of the occupations they chose (salary, length of education/training, job growth, etc.), as well as some basic questions about budgeting.

Instructor Role: Review with students the definition of a salary. Explain that the salary amount on the trading card is based on a year. Review with students how to convert the yearly salary into a weekly salary. Review with students what job growth/future outlook of an occupation means. Review budgeting (adding and subtracting)
