Topics for the Group Project

Project2 COSC 6340 Spring 2003 Topics for the Group Project

Each group makes a 25 minute presentation and writes a 10-15 single spaced report including references; each group has 4-6 members; presentations are scheduled for April 17, and 22, and the report is due on April 28, 8p.

Thoughts on Parts of Project2 Presentations / Reports for ‘Paper Review’ Groups 1. Define the area of research that is the focus of your project; define the context and the knowledge base the research is based on. 2. What approaches are investigated by current research; what problems do they investigate, what methods and techniques do they use, what software/hardware architecture do they use, who are the major players in the field? 3. Talk: Pick one/two papers and discuss in more detail what methods/techniques they introduce. You might or might not do the same for your report. 4. Summary and conclusion --- summarize your findings; evaluate what you seen, what do you believe is the future direction of this research area; evaluate the papers you read.

Remark: What is said here does not apply to the ‘Data Streams’ and ‘Genomic Databases‘ Groups Genome Talk (Possible Subjects) 1. Existing Databases in Genomics 2. DBMS Support for Genomics 3. Knowledge Integration and Sharing 4. Support for the Storage and Retrieval of Gene Sequences 5. Annotation 6. What are the key research problems in genomics; what kind of database technology is needed to successfully solve / facilitate to solve a particular problem 7. Could take a technology view or research point of view 8. Focus first on designing a talk; then write a report based on the talk… Thoughts on Streams Groups Talk/Report

1. Define what problems are investigated by the area of mining and query data streams? 2. What approaches are investigated by current research to solve the problems listed by the first part;, what methods and techniques do they use, what software/hardware architecture do they use, who are the major players in the field? Use the tutorial as the main pointer to find papers other material. 3. Pick a sub-field of the field and one or two papers associated with this sub-field, and discuss in more detail the contents of the selected paper. Do they same in the report! 4. Summary and conclusion --- summarize your findings; evaluate what you seen, what do you believe is the future direction of this research area, did you like the papers, was it difficult to read the papers, after doing the project did you learn / hear about any interesting things you did not know before? Schedule of Presentations Project2 COSC 6340 Spring 2003 Th., April 17:  A Database Clustering --- review research papers Ketan Solanki, Chieh-Chih Chu, Haifeng Cheng, Chaofan Sun, Rahul Jamsandekar  B Decision Tree Learning in databases --- review research papers; there will be 2 Groups: o Group1: Sachin Nikam, Sukhdeep Sophi, Murali Achari, Adita Toomula, Uma Gopinath (talk should give a 7-10 min. introduction/review of the “classical” decision tree learning algorithm and center on “scalability of decision tree learning algorithms”). o Group2: Wenjing Cheng, Wenyan Li, Jianwei Wu, Yonghan Zhu, Yingchun Chen (talk should discuss efforts to integrate data mining services into DBMS, such MS SQL Server 2000, and other topics).

Tu., April 22:  C Genomic Databases (what can the field of databases do for the field of genomics?) --- survey Fuhua Zhou, Yonghong Yan, Mary Chou, Catherine Putonti, Fang-Chen Hung.  F Querying and Mining Data Streams --- Tutorial-Based Satish Dakshina Murphy, Xiao Gu, Sujing Wang, Yan Wang, Barath Kumar, Srividhya Chandraserakan.  H Computing Iceberg Queries and Solving Related Problems --- review research papers Radhika Venkatasubramanyam, Sunanda Lakshiminarayan, Girija Sethuraman, Lianxiang Ji, Mingdong Wan. Project2 Topic Preference Information

Name: ssn:

List of Topics you do not like to choose (at most 4):

Preference List (e.g. A;B>D>F;G would express that you like topic A and B the most; D the third most, G and F tied for fourth most):

Return to Dr. Eick no later than 5p on Tuesday, March 25. I will try to set up groups considering your preferences, but if everybody likes the same topics or the topics you chose are not very popular, you might not get the topic(s) you like the most.
