PRESS RELEASE
THERE’S A ROYAL WIN FOR THIS YEAR’S FLY FORBO COMPETITION
Forbo Flooring Systems is pleased to announce that Hazel Pearson from Michael Laird Architects (MLA) will be jetting off to Chicago this June following the company’s win at this year’s Fly Forbo competition - due to its impactful design at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) premises in Edinburgh.
For the winning project, MLA created an efficient layout that clearly defined key areas within the RICS building. MLA achieved this by specifying Forbo’s Allura Wood vinyl tile and Tessera Mix carpet tiles in a very neutral colour palette, which acted as a backdrop for the striking accents of rich purple from Forbo’s Marmoleum range that helped to zone off the key areas.
Julie Dempster, Marketing Manager at Forbo Flooring Systems, commented: “Choosing a winner for this year’s Fly Forbo competition was extremely difficult. However with the combination of subtle patterns, light grey shades and a bright purple, MLA created a floor space that was not only impressive, but also enhanced employees’ performance, health and well being. Indeed, both the lighter shades of Allura Wood vinyl and Tessera Mix carpet tiles achieve high Light Reflectance Values, which helps to better reflect natural light within the work place. This ultimately means that the employees at RICS will benefit from an improved and healthier working environment.
“Congratulations to MLA for winning this year’s competition – the award and trip to Chicago is well deserved.”
Hazel commented on the win: “I am ecstatic that we have won this year’s Fly Forbo competition and I still can’t quite believe that I’ll be flying to Chicago to attend NeoCon – I’ve always wanted to go!

“I feel that flooring designs need to be as equally innovative as the overall design and thanks to Forbo’s wide portfolio of products, I am able to create the unique flooring schemes I desire. My favourite product from Forbo is Marmoleum; it’s available in a wide range of colours, it stands the test of time in terms of style and durability and the icing on the cake is that it is a sustainable floor covering – what more could you want!?”
Chris Naughton from the Sheila Bird Group was presented with the Highly Commended award and a trip to Amsterdam, thanks to his flooring designs at the Manchester Science Partnership – Greenheys Building. Chris installed a bespoke digital vinyl floor covering of an A to Z map of Manchester, within the break out area of the building. This combined with the brick wall backdrop, colour pops of purple and contemporary furniture created an interesting and inspiring space.
The Fly Forbo competition was established to recognise designers and architects that have specified products from Forbo’s extensive portfolio, to create inspirational, innovative and creative projects. As such, the 2015/2016 competition will be open for entries from 1st July 2015, where projects featuring outstanding use of Forbo’s flooring or surfacing products are encouraged to be submitted.
