July

July… the heat, the humidity, the joy of summer camp! You KNOW your kids want to go to camp, what kid doesn’t?! The question is very simply, what can you afford? And again, is it worth it to maybe pinch pennies a little to give your kids a good experience? You’re only a kid once!

When you’re filling out your checks for this month, don’t forget that if you signed up for a summer activity last month that has a monthly cost, you need to keep paying for it!

Instructions for this month. Same old, same old – take care of your responsibilities first. Don’t forget any ongoing monthly costs for the summer (and if you took on monthly responsibilities for your kids in May, don’t forget that either!).

After you have finished writing those checks/deposits, it’s time to decide whether or not to send your kids to camp. The following is a list of available camps in your area, their length, and their cost. Remember, doing nothing may be cheaper in the short run, but would YOU want to be your kid?! (Good relationships with your kids is REALLY important, don’t you think?)

Camp Duration Cost Horse camp 2 weeks (overnight camp) $425 Science camp 1 week (day camp) $190 Soccer camp (you can sign up for multiple 1 week (day camp) $80 sessions) Field Hockey camp (you can sign up for 1 week (day camp) $80 multiple sessions) Cross Country camp (you can sign up for 1 week (day camp) $80 multiple sessions) Volleyball camp (you can sign up for multiple 1 week (day camp) $80 sessions) Football camp (you can sign up for multiple 1 week (day camp) $80 sessions) Tennis camp (you can sign up for multiple 1 week (day camp) $80 sessions) Scout camp 2 weeks (overnight camp) $300 Church camp 2 weeks (overnight camp) $180 Any other day camp (tell what kind) 1 week (day camp) $125 Any other overnight camp (tell what kind) 2 weeks (overnight camp) $225 Once you’ve decide on a camp (if you choose any of them), then answer the following questions below:

Are you going to send your kids to camp? ______

If so, which one(s)? Boy: ______

Girl:______

How much total will you spend for these experiences for you children?______

(DON’T forget to write a check for each camp!!!!)

If your children are NOT going to camp, what are they going to be doing instead?______

Do YOU (the real you) go to camp in the summers?______

August

August is always bittersweet – it’s the last few days of freedom before the return to school! While kids dread August because it means going back to school, parents dread it because it means going back to school… shopping. That’s right, all those new folders, calculators, pencils, backpacks, and clothes cost something! This month, you’ll be drawing a wild card to see how much back to school shopping hits your pocketbook.

Instructions for this month. Responsibilities first! (There’s a life lesson for you…) After that, make sure you write a check for any summer activities that you signed up for in June, or any extra responsibilities you took on in May.

Once you’ve finished that, you can go draw a card for August. The “required” dollar amount on the card represents how much you have to spend for both of your kids’ back-to-school shopping. Remember, this is not an optional expense – they have to have books, pencils, paper, and calculators. The “optional” amount on the bottom represents costs that are not required by the school, but that your children really think they need. You can decide if you’re going to pay that or not, but remember what YOU (the real you) want when you go back to school: new clothes, a new look, new shoes, etc. These things are not really required by the school, but the question is, are you going to choose to provide them to your children?

Make your decision and write your check. Remember, the optional expense must be ADDED to the required expense (it doesn’t replace it)! Then, answer the following questions:

How much did you HAVE to spend on back-to-school expenses?______

Did you choose to buy new clothes and shoes for your kids, too?______How much did back-to-school shopping cost you in all?______

Do you know how much your parents/guardians spend on you in back-to-school expenses?___

September

Well, life is a little more back to normal. You’re still going to work (did you enjoy your summer?), but now your kids are back at their “work” as well. You can settle back down into a little more of a routine. September doesn’t really bring with it any new expenses except for the normal, unforeseen realities of real life.

Instructions for this month. Take care of your responsibilities.

After that, SURPRISE! You get a bonus!!!! Your boss decides to give you a 5% bonus. That means that she is going to give you 1/20 of your salary in one lump sum. Not bad, huh?!

Figure out your bonus.

1. First, put your gross annual salary on the line below:

______

2. Now, find 1/10 of this. (Remember the decimal trick!)

______

3. Now, find ½ of that new amount. (1/20 is ½ of 1/10, right?)

______

How much will your bonus be?______

Enter your bonus as a deposit in your check register.

After you have entered your bonus, draw a situation card for September. Write a check/enter a deposit in your register. Then answer the following questions:

Is this an extra credit or debit? ______

How much is this credit/debit for? ______

Once you’re done with that, show your teacher all that you’ve done for these three months and get their signature:
