Interview with Katie Couric on the Today Show on June 27, 2005 Growing Old Series

Katie: Today on the growing old series we are joined by Creative Memories Co- founder Rhonda Anderson and Cheryle Lightle. Welcome ladies.

Rhonda: Thank you for having us Katie.

Katie: As part of our growing old series we have been taking a look at the Alzheimer’s. This is a memory robbing disease. At this time there is no cure for this disease. Your organization is committed to helping end this disease.

Cheryle: That is correct. Creative Memories believes in and teaches the importance of preserving the past, enriching the present and inspiring hope for the future. Our mission is to connect Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones by using meaningful albums.

Katie: Have their been any studies conducted to show benefits of scrapbooking photo albums with Alzheimer’s patients?

Rhonda: Yes. Ellen Mahoney of Boston College observed the patients were distracted from the effects of the disease by looking through past and current photos. The photos comforted the patients because they are able to relate to the environment and remember some of the people’s names.

Katie: When compiling a scrapbook photo album what should our viewers need to know?

Cheryle: Family members or volunteers should find pictures of patient smiling, family, friends, and even memorabilia. This will help the patient to recall past and current events. The pictures can offer them happiness. When looking for pictures find pictures that are large or the image is larger. It will be easier for the patient to identify who is in it and what was taking place.

Rhonda: Journaling is another important step when scrapbooking. If at all possible let the patient journal near photos. If they are unable to then write clearly for them. Let them be a part of the journaling by interviewing them. It is best to use Katie Brann RE 5130 short phrases and larger letters. Allow the patient to have a part in creating the photo album.

Katie: You also team with the Alzheimer’s Association in raising money for research. Please tell us more.

Cheryle: In 2001 we partnered with them. Since 2001 Creative Memories has donated $1 million dollars. Each year we create an album, which is sold to customers. A potion of the sale is donated to the association. Creative Memories is a corporate sponsor of Alzheimer’s Memory Walks. Six hundred communities also take part in Memory Walks through North America in efforts to raise money.

Katie : Thank you for supporting further research and for being here today to inform us how therapeutic scrapbook photo albums are.

Description of Topic Selection

I began scrapbooking in 2001 right after I got married. In 2002 I began to learn about the Creative Memories mission by going to home classes. I had a desire to share their vision with others. By becoming a Creative Memories consultant I was able to get a 30% discount on my products.

Throughout the past three years I have taught some home classes and continued to scrapbook. I was interested in learning more about the business that was started by two ladies. I wanted to learn why and how Creative Memories products compare with the growing scrapbooking market. Katie Brann RE 5130

Dear Rhonda,

I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your perseverance the afternoon you called the company to order more albums. You persistence to let the phone ring until someone answered even if it were after their working hours is a lesson we all can learn from in our business. I often think back to all the albums that you purchased before holding your women’s conference. Then what you must have felt like when you came home. It makes it easier when I know you understand what I am going through because you have already been there.

Because of you my grandmother no longer has three full shoeboxes of pictures under her cabinet. I am grateful I now know the stories behind the photographs. The albums are gifts full of memories to my sisters and I. It would have been heart breaking for us to look at the boxes of photos and not know the stories of joy, wonder, and fear.

Creating photo albums is a time I relax. I consistently use your four simple steps to complete my albums. I like cropping the best photos to focus on the best part of the photo. Since journaling is the heart of the story behind the photo I never complete a page without it. After I mount my photos I keep my pages simple by mounting only a few stickers or using my favorites from the short cuts packs.

Thank you for being committed to providing me with quality albums and supplies that are safe. I appreciate your commitment to test all products! You have impacted my family’s life by preserving our memories for future generations.

Sincerely,

Katie Katie Brann RE 5130

Interview with Katie Couric on the Today Show - Each year Creative Memories creates an Alzheimer’s album. It is sold for a month. I was interested to learn how long

Creative Memories has donate a potion of the money to the Alzheimer’s Association.

During this month Creative Memories sponsors a Memory Walk.

Personal Letter to Rhonda Anderson - Rhonda Anderson was a co-founder of

Creative Memories. It was interesting to read in The Creative Memories Way how the business began. It was not her intention the day she made a phone call to begin a home based business.

Creative Memories Newsletter – Through my research I learned that it is important to inform customers of Creative Memories wonderful incentives. Creative Memories offers person incentive which retail stores do not. Creative Memories also puts so much time into testing there products and staying on the cutting edge. They have published a number of articles related to developing digital pictures.

Example of a Scrapbook Page – I wanted to put what I had learned about four quick steps to completing a page in action for a reader. I wanted to demonstrate how to crop a picture so that you are showing the story the pictures are telling. I also wanted to demonstrate journaling and how to create a quick layout.
