 Welcome- Dr. Fred Leickly Meeting minutes from June 19, 2008th meeting were approved.

 Marcie Memmer -ISDH Update 1. ISDH website has been revamped and you can now find the asthma website at www.asthma.in.gov. The burden report is on the home page, as well as supplements to the original document. Breatheasyville should be available soon. 2. New publications on website include Back to School Checklists for both school nurses and parents. 3. Vehicle idling brochure is now available. Contact Marcie or Trisha for copies. 4. Completed grant application for Visiting Lectureship Program on 2nd Hand Smoke. Dr. Ellen Hahn from the University of Kentucky has agreed to be the speaker. Also working with Riley School of Medicine to speak at Child Care Conference. ITPC has partnered with ISDH for a lunch and learn on policy development.

Presentations

Results of InJAC Evaluation by Kristin Hobson were very positive. Recommendations include: 1. Consider restructuring current InJAC leadership positions to allow for multi-year terms 2. Add a Membership Committee to systematically access coalition membership 3. Provide updates on coalition activities to InJAC members and partners (currently done at quarterly meetings) 4. Require workgroups to systematically access progress towards their objectives and develop strategies for action on a regular basis 5. Encourage workshops to meet on a more regular basis in order to maintain momentum and accomplish objectives 6. Prior to attaining 501(c)3 status, reexamine the benefits and drawbacks of becoming incorporated. For a full copy of this report, please contact Kristin at [email protected].

Indiana Hospitalization Discharge Data by Hesam Lahsaee- ISDH Asthma Program. Using 2005 data, Hesam compared number of patients admitted for hospitalization by age, race, and other qualifiers. For more information or questions about this presentation, email [email protected].

1 Health by Design – The Overlap of the Built Environment and Public Health by Kim Irwin There is an emerging movement in Central Indiana to bring together advocates of community design, transportation and health to support healthy and active living. Initially conceived in the summer of 2006, this movement has prompted the development of a new coalition, Health by Design, which has a diverse and growing membership. Members and partners include non-profit organizations, government entities, academia, private industries, businesses, and environmental groups. Health by Design is comprised of community planners; designers; architects; builders; and transportation, public and environmental health, recreation and safety personnel. The priority goals of Health by Design are to:  Increase neighborhood, city and regional connectivity  Increase walking, biking and other public transit options  Encourage land use decision making that promotes public health  Reduce dependency on automobiles For more information, please contact Kim at [email protected].

Analysis of InJAC’s Ability to Provide Input to Public Policy Issues by Ingrid Ritchie-Environmental Quality Workgroup. Discussion draft distributed to members included how we could/should handle public policy issues through resolutions, emergency actions, designated representatives and collaboration. Committee Updates

Data & Surveillance- Report given by Hesam Lahsaee- Analyzing data from the Call Back Survey which included 100 questions.

Public Education- Report given by Trisha Dane- Resource guide is now on the ISDH website. Working on evaluating the media campaign to see how effective it was - data from our push for airings during Asthma Awareness Month are poor, but are not complete (Ad Council only monitors two of our four radio PSA's and only in two cities). There were 3 airings of TV PSA's during May. There was also no response on our surveys to providers regarding our print materials.

Children & Youth – Report given by Phyllis Lewis- Phyllis and Julie Slavens received funding through their job to look at asthma data in 50 Indiana schools. Trisha Dane- working on Child Care Provider training project. Working with Anthem to get funding for educational items and incentives such as spray bottles with messages about cleaning products; birthday calendars with asthma messages based on the seasons, and Merck is providing coloring books. Training program is still being created, and should be available online or in person.

Environmental Quality- Report given by Kim Irwin- The group worked on the Analysis of InJAC’s Ability to Provide Input to Public Policy Issues topic (presented by Ingrid).

Health Care Providers- Report given by Dr. Frederick Leickly. Finished 10 slide PowerPoint presentation to summarize the 470 pages of new guidelines. The next step is to blow up each section into smaller sections.

2. Invitation from Merck & Co- InJAC members are invited to a medical presentation program only for healthcare professionals that will focus on Heterogeneity in Asthma. 3. Marcie indicated that she has been contacted by several pharmaceutical companies to talk about what resources they could offer to InJAC. It was suggested by the group to keep everything non-branded. This is another topic to be discussed by the Executive Committee as to how InJAC can/should proceed and take advantage of the excellent resources and make them available to InJAC workgroups and members.
