Professional Educational Experience While a deputy sheriff with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department, the patrol commander recognized my love for training and asked me to join his staff. He put me in charge of the new- hire training program for deputies, a position normally reserved for Sergeants and Lieutenants. That position eventually led to a Sergeant’s position as supervisor of the training division, overseeing high-liability training as well as day-to-day training for over five hundred employees. In 1991, I left the Sheriff’s Department for APCO-International, the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International, running the APCO Institute. During my tenure there, I and others built the APCO Online Institute in 1996, teaching public safety communications topics to students all over the world. I certified instructors in online teaching, and the Institute is a success today. In 1997, I wrote a book, Training on the Web: A guide for instructor and designers. This book was meant to be the book that I needed when I first designed the Online Institute. The book was marketed to public safety agencies and not-for-profit entities around the world. In 1998, I started my own business doing consulting and training for the online environment, and also taught at DSC in the School of Emergency Services. I have created eight online courses for DSC, four of which were existing courses and four completely new courses. I have assisted the Florida Department of Law Enforcement with many revision projects dealing with in-service topics and the Law Enforcement Certification course. My current DSC load consists of two online college courses, supplemented by classroom presentation in the Law Enforcement Academy. I also created and maintain the web presence for the School of Emergency Services (www.DaytonaState.edu/esi) Kevin R. Duffy July 2009
