"A" My Name is Alice by Jane Bayer Basic Word Processing Skills and Pattern Writing

Objective: The student will learn to change fonts and colors in a word processing program. This project will help to reinforce the English lesson that proper nouns begin with capital letters. Students will also incorporate Social Studies/Geography skills, categorization, as well as words beginning with certain letters of the alphabet.

Before Beginning:  Show your students how to open the word processing program and begin a new document.  Review with your students the concept that proper nouns begin with capital letters.  Demonstrate how to Format fonts and change colors, size, style, in the same window.  Demonstrate the use of the Shift key while typing names.  Students should have a rough draft of their pattern writing before going to computer.

Management Tips and Procedures:  Read the book A My Name is Alice by Jane Bayer to the class as an introduction. Discuss the alphabetical order and the pattern that can be found in each page.  Assign students a different letter of the alphabet and give them the pattern for writing their part of the class book.  Brainstorm possibilities for words beginning with different letters in the categories of: 1. Names - male and female 2. States, countries or places 3. Products to sell 4. Animals  Students complete the writing process of first draft, revision, and editing before going to the computer center.  Once the final draft is completed on the computer and printed, students should illustrate their part of the book before binding as a class book.
