Content/Presentation/Demonstration Outline Tell students that the pitman arm can be directly responsible for directional stability. Explain that a damaged pitman arm can be directly responsible for the steering wheel being off center. Also,a loose pitman arm on the steering gear output shaft could cause a steering shimmy below 30 mph. If removal or replacement of the pitman arm is required, instruct students to scribe mark the pitman arm in relation to the steering gear output shaft and use a suitable puller to remove. Upon installation, tell them to align the scribe marks made upon removal. Inform students that when they replace a steering or pitman arm, they should perform all of the following: *Road test when repairs are completed, *Check and correct for changes in wheel alignment, *Lube the replacement part after installation.
