Introduction

Problem solving is a very important Mathematical skill.

This booklet will provide opportunities for students to engage in activities that require them to:

 Investigate

 Make conjectures

 Use problem-solving strategies

 Apply their mathematical understanding

 Verify solutions

 Use mathematical language.

The first section of this booklet focuses on key skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Make sure that you show any working out that is required. Do not use a calculator for any of these questions.

Task 1 – These tasks are meant to help you think about different types of number.

1. Find two consecutive numbers which when added together equal 47.

2. Find three consecutive numbers which when added together equal 84.

3. Find a multiple of 5 and a multiple of 6 that have a difference of 11.

9 4. Find a multiple of 7 and a multiple of 4 that add together to make a total of 100.

5. Find two numbers which when added together make 62 and when one is subtracted from the other the answer is 12.

6. Find two numbers which when added together make 20 and when multiplied together are 84.

7. Find a number whose cube is bigger than its square by 294.

8. Find two numbers whose highest common factor is 12 and whose lowest common multiple is 1260.

Task 2 – A bunch of pens!

Danielle is buying a lot of stationery and needs some help. Read each question carefully, they are not all the same. You can use a calculator but make sure you still show your working out.

1. Rulers cost 45p each.

Pens cost 35p each.

Danielle bought four rulers and five pens.

How much did this cost her?

10 2. As well as the costs above, the shop also sells pencils cost at 15p each.

Danielle bought four rulers, five pens and three pencils.

How much did this cost her?

3. The prices at the shop have increased. Rulers cost 55p each and pens cost 35p each. Danielle bought four rulers and six pens.

How much change would she receive from a £10 note?

4. Rulers cost 60p and pens cost 25p each. Danielle bought four rulers and some pens. If the total cost was £4.40 how many pens did she buy?

5. Rulers cost 45p and pens cost 35p. Danielle bought four rulers and a bunch of pens. She paid with a £5 note and received 40p change. How many pens did she buy?

Coin Puzzle

A bag contains £20.14 consisting of 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p coins only. If there are at least 14 of each of these in the bag, what is the least possible number of coins in the bag?

12 Task 3 – Bouncing Balls

A company is making bouncing balls and needs your help with some calculations.

1. A bouncy ball is made from 75% rubber and the rest plastic.

A single ball weighs 20g.

How much plastic is needed for 50 balls?

13 3. A ball is dropped and bounces up a height that is 75% of the height from which it was dropped.

It then bounces again to a height that is 75% of the previous height and so on.

A student drops that ball from 1.5m, what is the height on the 3rd bounce?

CHALLENGE (Think reverse percentages and compound interest)

4. A ball has a volume of 1000 cm³. When packed into a box they take up 85% of the available space.

The company is going to sell 50 per box.

What size of box is needed?

14 5. A ball is dropped and bounces up a height that is 75% of the height from which it was dropped.

It then bounces again to a height that is 75% of the previous height and so on.

The 6th bounce of a ball is measured as 0.2m. What was the height it was dropped from?

15 Section 3 – Planning a Holiday

You are going to plan a family holiday. You will have to take in to account the likes and dislikes of different family members but have to design a holiday that everyone will enjoy. You are planning for the Jones family, a family of 4 – Zara, James, Tish and Henry.

Written task

Describe your ideal holiday, this will help you when thinking about what the Jones family might like to do on holiday.

These questions might help you to structure your writing:

 What sort of things do you like to do on holiday?

 Are they the same as the rest of your family?

 Do you always do what YOU want to do?

 Do you need a lot of money for your ideal holiday?

Remember to write in sentences.

16 17 Your task is to plan the Jones’ family holiday to Florida. You need to read the information below about the members of the Jones family on the next page and the activities that they can do in Florida. Your main task is to complete the holiday planner, including calculating the total cost. You can use a calculator for this task.

You must:

 Select one main activity for each member of the family for each day.

o Each child much be accompanied by an adult.

o The family must stay together on a minimum of two days.

 Complete the holiday planner showing your decisions.

 You need to consider the cost of the activities.
