The global economic crisis – Including children in the policy response

ODI and UNICEF conference: The global economic crisis – Including children in the policy response

Dates: November 9-10, 2009 Location: UNICEF UK office, 30a Great Sutton Street, London, England

UNICEF and ODI are jointly hosting a conference in London November 9-10, 2009 entitled: The global economic crisis – Including children in the policy responses, and we are writing to extend an invitation to you.

Evidence already shows that children and women are being severely affected by the global economic crisis and the food and fuel price instability that went before it. While there are indications of emerging recovery in some areas, many impacts of the crisis in developing countries like slowing growth, reduced demand and employment and declining budgets may only be beginning to unfold. The full impacts of the global slowdown on the poorest and most vulnerable may yet be fully felt.

This conference will bring together development practitioners, policy experts and academic researchers from around the world to develop a deeper understanding of the ways in which the food and fuel price volatility, financial market volatility and global economic slowdown are affecting children, women and other vulnerable groups, and how policy responses to the crisis can put these most vulnerable groups first. At the conference, ODI will present a report on past crises based on research it has undertaken for UNICEF as part of this broader partnership.

UNICEF and ODI are inviting speakers as well as panelists who will represent a broad range of disciplines and sectors to encourage discussion of these issues of vital importance to children. Attendees will include academics, representatives from both developing and developed country governments, members of the private sector, partner agencies and IFIs and donors.

We very much hope you will be able to join for this important endeavor, and look forward to hearing from you. Please RSVP to [email protected]. Due to very limited space for the event, please let us know if you would like to designate another colleague to attend in your place. HOTELS
