TALES FROM THE SCOUT HUT

Both the Beavers and the Cubs enjoyed visits to Tesco to do the Farm to Fork Trail in March. The Beavers went to Whitfield Tesco and the Cubs to Tesco at Manston. The young people were given a worksheet each to complete while they were given a tour of all the food sections – fruit, vegetables, bread, the fresh meat and fish counters where the different tastes and smells were explained – they even visited the freezer! Then they had a tasting session when they got to try different types of bread, cheese and muesli, followed by juice and chocolate biscuits! At the end they were all presented with a goodie bag, badge and certificate. Tesco provides this experience for free and we would like to thank them for making our group so welcome.

Kent Ted is pictured in this photo. He is currently enjoying a Scouting Adventure around our District (Deal, Walmer, Sandwich and District), visiting all the different Beaver Colonies, starting at Wingham. In July all the Beaver Colonies will come together for a Teddy Bears Picnic at Walmer. Kent Ted is going to be making his way all over Kent this year. He says he had a great time in Wingham!

The Cubs have been working on their Global Challenge Badge throughout March. They have been looking at food from around the world and tasting it too! They have also been learning about maps and had a hike. At the end of term they had a Spy Night sleepover in the hut. This included a Spy Hike around the village and being action spies with Nerf Guns at the hut! The sleepover ended with hot dogs. A great time was had by all! Our team of Flo, Liam, Harry and Charlie took part in the District Scout Cooking Competition early in March. Their two course menu consisted of Clear Noodle Soup as a starter followed by Sausages and Potato and Leek Hash. Yum. This was all cooked on just two gas burners. Plenty of practising went on before the event so I can confirm that the menu was delicious! The competition took place at the Sea Scouts HQ in Walmer on 7th March and our team came a magnificent joint second – well done to them all. Cooking has been very much a focus for all the Scouts this month as they also devised menus to cook at home, and had a go at cooking bread and sponges in oranges over open fires outdoors. However they have also made the most of the outdoors with an evening spent playing wide games and a hike.

The Explorers have been working hard on the International section of the Platinum and Diamond Chief Scouts Awards. They have been learning about other countries and making presentations to the other Explorers on their findings. They also had a hike around Bramling to practise their Navigation skills and towards the end of the month they started to learn First Aid Skills.

We held another Working Party at the Hut in the middle of March when we got lots of small jobs completed – coat hooks put up, notice boards hung amongst other things. The office which had become a dumping ground for various DIY items was cleared out and cleaned and is now a fully functioning office space for the Leaders! We still need to fund raise to complete the works including the replacement of the flooring in the hall so look out for our next fundraiser which will be Car Washing a bit later in the year.
