Umphlett, Dantzler, Hinson, Jefferson, Limehouse and Merrill 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\nbd\12514ac06.doc 11 12 Introduced in the House on May 10, 2006 13 Adopted by the House on May 10, 2006 14 15 Summary: Berkeley High School Mock Trial Team 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 5/10/2006 House Introduced and adopted HJ-9 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 5/10/2006 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO CONGRATULATE THE BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL 12 MOCK TRIAL TEAM FOR WINNING THE STATE TITLE AT 13 THE STATE MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION AND TO WISH 14 THEM THE BEST IN ALL THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS. 15 16 Whereas, for the second straight year, the Berkeley High School 17 Stags emerged victorious as they outscored fifteen other high 18 schools at the State Mock Trial Competition held at the Marc 19 Westbrook Judicial Center in Lexington; and 20 21 Whereas, the Stags edged out Fort Mill High School to defend 22 their 2005 State Title by impressing the panel of volunteer lawyers 23 with their persuasive arguments and strong presentations; and 24 25 Whereas, the Berkeley mock trial team will represent South 26 Carolina at the National High School Mock Trial Competition in 27 Oklahoma City; and 28 29 Whereas, the state competition is sponsored by the South Carolina 30 Bar Law Related Education Division, which was developed to 31 improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education 32 and is made possible through an IOLTA grant from the South 33 Carolina Bar Foundation; and 34 35 Whereas, this Berkeley High School number one team consists of: 36 Harrison Barnes, Jessica Bryant, Jennie Cumbie, Haley Evans, 37 Shelley Grosso, Maggie Horton, Meghan Jackson, Jane Landis, 38 Terrance Lanier, Kelli Luebben, Travis Lynes, Laurel Parker, 39 Tony Rivers, and Alex Tracy who were under the skilled and able 40 tutelage of teacher coaches Karen Bates and David Dangerfield, 41 and attorney coaches Jack Landis and Elizabeth Warner; and 42

1 [5112] 1 1 Whereas, it is proper and fitting that the members of the House of 2 Representatives pause in their deliberations to recognize this 3 outstanding mock trial team and their coaches for winning the state 4 title at the State Mock Trial Competition. Now, therefore, 5 6 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 7 8 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 9 by this resolution, congratulate the Berkeley High School Mock 10 Trial Team for winning the state title at the State Mock Trial 11 Competition and wish them the best in all their future endeavors. 12 13 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 14 the team members, coaches, and school officials of the Berkeley 15 High School Mock Trial Team. 16 ----XX---- 17
