Important things to remember for today’s film:

I. Muslims have lived in India since the medieval period of history. Just as Muslims moved into Africa and Europe (Spain) from Mecca, they also moved into India. During Gandhi’s time, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Christians, and Sikhs (“seeks”) all lived together in India.

II. The British (English) controlled India as part of their empire. We studied imperialism in Africa. Just as England took parts of Africa (like Kenya), it also took parts of South Asia. In the movie today, the British control both India and South Africa.

III. There were many people who wanted to lead India to its independence (Gandhi among them). One was named Nehru, and he was a Hindu. Another was named Jinnah, and he was a Muslim. We will meet both in the movie today.
