Vocabulary: ~review the vocabulary for this unit in your Social Studies notes:
Forms of government to know: monarchy – rule by a king or queen oligarchy – rule by a few (in Athens: the nobles ruled in an “aristocracy”; in Sparta: ruled by the military) tyranny – rule by a “tyrant” (ruler who took power by force) democracy – rule by the people (the citizens of Athens ruled themselves in a direct democracy)
Places to know: acropolis – “high city”; a high rocky hill where ancient Greek where ancient Greek people built cities (**why did the Greeks build their cities on these high hills?) agora – the marketplace or center of a city-state; a meeting place where citizens discussed many issues
“ People” to know: helot – slave perioikos – the middle class in Sparta; they could own land and conduct business, but had no voting rights and were not citizens philosopher – a person who spends his/her life forming questions in order to achieve understanding or learn the truth (Socrates was a very important philosopher)
Gods/Goddesses: ~be able to identify who was the patron god or goddess of Sparta and Athens
Timeline: ~Review your notes about the timeline (or progression) of the various forms of governments Athens tried out
Comparison chart: ~study your chart in your notes that compares Athens to Sparta. Be able to identify and explain at least 2 similarities and 2 differences between these two city-states.
