Smith & Georg Chemical Accreditation Course Learning and Assessment Strategies

Training Package Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation & Land Management Training Package

Units of Code Title Nominal competency hours AHCCHM304A Transport, handle and store chemicals 50 AHCCHM303A Prepare and apply chemicals 70 Client(s) Primary producers, land managers and others who use agricultural and veterinary (farm) chemicals in their work. Participants The course is delivered to individuals who handle and use farm chemicals, including owner/operators and employees. Successful completion of the course will allow participants to purchase and use the more dangerous Schedule 7 chemicals. By itself, this course is not sufficient training for licensing of spray operators (Pest Management Technicians) under the Controlled Substances Act; although it can be a valuable start for people wanting such a licence. Delivery and assessment strategies will be selected to best suit the learning needs of the participants. Refer to Smith & Georg Policy and Procedures on Identifying Learning Needs and Designing Training and Assessment. Delivery Duration arrangements A one-day workshop (8.5 hours) is normally provided for people who have not previously completed training and assessment to the units of competence. In some situations this workshop will be offered over two days. This is called the Chemical Accreditation program. A half-day workshop (4.5 hours) is normally provided for people who have previously completed training and assessment to the units of competence. In some situations this workshop will be offered over a full day. This is called the Chemical Re-accreditation program. Participants in both these programs are expected to read some course material in their own time prior to attending the workshop; and to complete some extra assessments in their own time after the workshop. Organisation Courses will be programmed when there is sufficient demand. Courses will be advertised through appropriate media to personnel in agricultural industries, particularly to businesses that purchase and use Schedule 7 chemicals. Registrations will be invited, and participants will be notified of their acceptance into the course, approximately one week before the course workshop. Learning support materials Course participants are normally provided with a comprehensive learning guide in a ring-binder, plus a selection of other printed reference material. There are also free downloads (forms, and other reference material), and numerous useful websites, on our website.

Workshop The course is normally delivered in a classroom-based workshop, comprising interactive presentations and group work. Where appropriate, workshops are presented in suitable workplaces, as long as a suitable training room is available. When the course is presented in a workplace, we often use workplace equipment and facilities in the teaching. Assessments are completed by participants, both in the workshop and back in their own workplace.

Home Study The course can be studied in the participant’s home or workplace. This option is appealing to people that have to travel long distances to attend training. All training materials are posted to the participant, as well as the assessments. Support for participants is available during business hours via phone, fax and email. Assessments are completed by the participant in their home and/or workplace and posted back to Smith & Georg.

Online The course can be studied online. Online presentations are mostly in the form of Powerpoint presentations with voice-over. Participants can log onto the site as often as they wish, to complete the course in their own time, and in their own home or workplace. Assessments are all completed online; some assessments are auto-marked online, and some must be returned to us for marking.

RPL, Recognition of Prior Learning Participants are invited on the Registration form to apply for RPL. For suitable participants (potential participants are counselled prior to enrolment in RPL, to make sure they are suitable for the RPL process, this involves a phone conversation with an assessor to gather evidence. If the participant is deemed to be competent, the assessor will ask for evidence to support the participant’s competence.

Consultation/ Consultation Input to Smith & Georg consults with relevant industry contacts, employers and regulating bodies on a Industry regular basis through phone conversations, meetings, and newsletters. Information gained from these consultations is used to review delivery and assessment of the course. Input Smith & Georg is active in making recommendations/commenting on industry initiatives

Participant Every participant is asked to provide feedback by completing a Course Evaluation Form. A Feedback summary of feedback is reviewed at Staff meetings and opportunities for improvement are identified from evaluating the feedback.
