Sonia Montaño

Officer in charge, Division for Gender Affairs, ECLAC

Sonia Montaño is a Bolivian sociologist. She is currently Officer in Charge of the Division for Gender Affairs at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC, United Nations).

Her professional career began in 1983 when she founded and directed the Centre of Information and Development for Women (CIDEM) in Bolivia, designing the first public policy proposal on gender in 1989. She was Undersecretary of Gender Affairs at the Ministry of Human Development of Bolivia between 1993 and 1995 and has served as advisor and consultant in several countries, primarily in Latin America.

Montaño has published works on public policies, citizenship and women’s political participation.

The latest publication under her direction is Millennium Development Goals 2006: A Look at Gender Equality and Women’s Autonomy (ECLAC, 2007).
