EDUCATION OFFICER POST JOB DESCRIPTION and FURTHER INFORMATION

1 Introduction The Montgomery Development Education Centre (MDEC) wishes to appoint an Education Officer to enable delivery of the newly funded Global Learning Programme Scotland (GLP-S) in the North East of Scotland. 2 The Montgomery Development Education Centre The Montgomery Development Education Centre (MDEC) is part of the Third World Centre (TWC), which was Aberdeen's original Fair Trade retailer and which remains committed to fair trade and other global justice issues. The TWC is a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Scottish Charity Number SC014585) with the purpose of educating and enabling people in the North East of Scotland to take action to create a fairer world. To help achieve this purpose the TWC set up the MDEC in 1983 to focus on undertaking and developing Education for Global Citizenship / Development Education within both formal and non-formal education. Development Education and Education for Global Citizenship are the processes that foster knowledge, skills and attitudes which promote justice and equality in a multicultural society and inter-dependent world. The MDEC has its office at 79 Queen Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1AN, where it also has a lending library of teaching resources on global development issues. Activities within the formal education sector presently provided by the MDEC include:  Advice service and web content for teachers to support the integration of Education for Global Citizenship / Development Education into their activities  Professional Learning Courses for teachers linked to specific themes e.g. Sustainable Development, Human and Children’s Rights, Fair Trade, Global Citizenship in Early Years etc.  Staff development for local teachers who are engaged in developing Global School Partnerships and / or who are making visits to African schools (the latter funded through the Wood Family Trust)  Workshops for University of Aberdeen Initial Teacher Education students  Development of local projects and events for schools and community. The MDEC is one of six independent Scottish Development Education / Global Learning Centres which work collaboratively to develop continuing professional development and global citizenship projects. The MDEC is also a member of the International Development Education Association of Scotland (IDEAS) – see www.ideas-forum.org.uk - a network of around 16 organisations and individuals that involved in Develop ment Education and Education for Global Citizenship across Scotland. As a member, the MDEC is involve d in developing national global citizenship initiatives / projects to support and enable local activities. In addition to the post of Education Officer there are two other employed staff based in the MDEC office:  A Senior Education Officer who is in overall charge of the work undertaken by the Centre, and  An Administrative Officer who provides administrative and general support for the work of the centre and staff. 3 The Global Learning Programme in Scotland (GLP-S) In 2013, IDEAS was successful in its application to manage the four year Global Learning Programme in Scotland – part of a UK-wide programme funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The six individual Development Education Centres in Scotland have been appointed as the principal providers of this programme within each of their respective geographical areas. The overall aim is to embed high quality global education in 50% of Scotland’s schools. The programme will develop and provide:  Continuing Professional Development for individual teachers, whole schools and school clusters  Events and networks where teachers can share their knowledge and expertise  Access to resources (including classroom teaching materials and twice yearly online versions of STRIDE – the Scottish teacher global citizenship newsletter) Before and after accessing support, schools and teachers will reflect on practice in order to feed into the monitoring and evaluation of the programme. Further information about this programme can be obtained either on our website www.montgomerydec.org.u k or by contacting MDEC staff at [email protected] . 4 Job Description Your main role will be to work on the Global Learning Programme. You will work closely with the MDEC’s Senior Education Officer, and will get support from the MDEC Administrative Officer for aspects of general programme administration and for the administration of the library and teaching resources. 4.1 Global Learning Programme You will enable the development, promotion, delivery and reporting of the MDEC’s responsibilities and activities within the new Global Learning Programme Scotland. Principal tasks will be to: 1. Develop continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers that links global learning / global citizenship to the Curriculum for Excellence 2. Deliver this CPD to individual teachers, whole schools and school clusters across the NE through a range of activities including in-service and twilight sessions, in cluster groups and at symposia and conferences 3. Contribute to the development and delivery of presentations to head teachers and senior management teams about the benefits and relevance of Global Learning and Development Education 4. Develop a close working relationship with Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire Council education departments, curriculum support staff, and key teachers and schools 5. Help to produce email newsletters, promote teaching resources and learning activities, and make direct contact with educators 6. Identify, recruit and enable experienced teachers to support and mentor others through the establishment of networks and mentoring groups 7. Plan, liaise and, in the later years of the project, deliver occasional events to extend the reach of the Global Learning Programme training to teachers and schools in Moray, Orkney and Shetland 8. Provide resource advice and facilitate the use of the library by teachers 9. Ensure that the administrative and financial activities linked to the programme are achieved on time 10. Ensure all audits and evaluations are completed 11. Write programme reports and promotional documents

Activities 4.2 and 4.3 below will support the above key programme activities. 4.2 Networking with other DECs and with national agencies In support of your GLP-S role, you will work with staff from both the other Scottish Development Education Centres and IDEAS, developing the content and delivery of the programme and occasionally giving presentations and workshops to a Scotland-wide audience. 4.3 Working with MDEC and TWC management You will engage with the management of the MDEC and TWC to ensure both the effective delivery of GLP-S and the development of future activities / projects leading on from this programme. Opportunities will also be available to feed the programme learning into the delivery of global citizenship workshops for student teachers at the University of Aberdeen School of Education. Overall, if adequate funding is available, there will be the opportunity to develop the range of activities undertaken and the responsibilities held. 4.4 Mode of working Within your work, you will be required to  Ensure the confidentiality of databases and of other aspects of MDEC’s work  Work in a manner that reflects the interests and values of the MDEC and supports the objectives of the MDEC and TWC  Follow TWC/MDEC procedures and policies such as the equal opportunities policy, and the health and safety policy  Complete a Disclosure Scotland check if needed  Undertake any other duties as may be required by the MDEC Senior Education Officer - within the level of the job description 5 Experience and qualities You should have a range of essential and highly desirable experiences, abilities and attitudes as below: 5.1 Essential 16. Understand and be committed to global justice issues such as human rights, sustainable development and fair trade 17. Have experience of the design and delivery of training sessions and interactive workshops for adults or young people in a school or out-of-school environment – ideally using participative methodologies 18. Possess good IT skills and have experience of using the internet, email and Microsoft Office software packages 19. Be able to plan and deliver your work so as to achieve the goals of the programme and meet deadlines 20. Be able to work creatively 21. Be able to manage multiple tasks 22. Possess a flexible approach to work 23. Be able to work both independently and within a team 24. Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills 25. Be able to relate well to teachers and to education staff 26. Be able to evaluate and report on project activities 27. Have access to a car and hold a full driving licence to enable travel to NE schools and education offices 5.2 Highly Desirable  Have experience, knowledge and understanding of the Scottish School Education System  Have project management experience (which may also include the skills of project design and the development of funding applications).  Have experience within the voluntary sector 6 Conditions of engagement You will be employed by The Third World Centre to work principally on the Global Learning Programme which has been funded by DFID for four years from 1 September 2013. 6.1 Length of contract The duration of employment is expected to be three and a half years, until 31 August 2017, in line with anticipated DFID funding. The agreement with DFID provides for a progress review in [July 2014] and a progress/funding review in [September 2015]. The DFID reviews will be heavily based on the achievements against targets of the Education Officer. You, as Education Officer, will therefore exercise significant influence to ensure that the reviews are successful and that funding continues. 6.2 Salary, start date etc. The post is available immediately or as soon as possible, allowing for any notice requirements to a current employer. The annual salary will be £13,650 based on working an average 21 hour week calculated over 52 weeks (this is 0.6 FTE, so the equivalent full-time, 35 hours per week, salary would be £22,750 per annum). Actual days and times of work will be negotiated but are required to remain flexible within the hours of 8.30am – 6.30pm to allow for after-school teacher training sessions and meetings. Many of the activities will happen during term-time, thus allowing some additional space for flexibility. You will have six weeks pro rata paid holiday per annum. You will be responsible to Susan Jenkins, Senior Education Officer, The Montgomery Development Education Centre. 6.3 Location of post You will be based at the MDEC office, 79 Queen Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1AN, but will also need to be able to work elsewhere, mostly at schools and education offices within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. Occasional visits to Moray, Shetland and Orkney may also be required, as will travel elsewhere in Scotland - e.g. to Perth or the central belt for development meetings and events. These trips are usually by public transport. For approved local NE car journeys a mileage allowance will be payable, which is currently 40p per mile. 7 Application process To apply for this post please send a detailed CV with a covering letter to Susan Jenkins following the directions given below.
