Course Syllabus

Course Description

This course discusses the factors necessary for the successful project management. Topics include project management concepts, needs identification, the project manager, teams, project organizations, project communications, project planning, scheduling, control and associated costs. Project management software tools will be an integral part of the course.

Team Project

Computer Lab Upgrade tasks to be completed by the end of the semester.

1. Install/connect new systems in JTS lab 2. Install/connect old systems in FYE lab 3. Develop IT inventory Database a. Time dependent b. Table/report development 4. Develop and present Project Management presentation a. Each student will be required to present a combined Menu/Drop-Down Menu PowerPoint presentation using Visual Basic programming techniques. b. Each presenter must last approximately 30 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions and discussion. c. Presentation should be professional (attire and timeliness) d. All team members must discuss their specific role(s) in the IT Install/Connect project

Service Learning Project

Service Learning project which will provide the student with the opportunity for hands-on, minds-on engagement in the practice and theory of service learning – the integration of community service.

Gido, J. and Clements, J., Successful Project Management, Nth Edition, Thomson-SouthWestern Publishing. About the Instructor

Dr. Kevin D. Sly has over 35 years of experience in information technology. Upon graduation from college, he worked for over 12 years as an officer in the USAF as a computer programmer, analyst, advanced weapons system operational test and evaluation manager, project manager, and Aerospace AFROTC instructor. Since 1996, he has taught over 3000 students in a variety of computer application courses as a Computer Information Systems Instructor in higher education. As an employee of Grambling State University, he was the first University and College of Business Web Administrator, and Computer Security Administrator. He worked several years as a First Year Experience Coordinator and Instructor. And for 3 years, he worked as a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide, and has taught all grades from kindergarten to high school seniors. He holds a BA in Computer Science from Grambling State University, a MA in Computer Resource and Information Management from Webster University, and Ed.D. in Developmental Education from Grambling State University. He is an ordained minister, and is married with 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren.
