NOVEL STUDY – THE KITE RUNNER MAJOR EVALUATION: LITERATURE CIRCLES

Literature circles are a collaborative way of approaching a novel study; they help readers engage meaningfully with the text. It will consist of an "inner circle" (which will consist of the group members responsible for presenting the assigned chapters), and an outer circle (consisting of the rest of the class). The inner circle leads the analysis and presentation; the outer circle takes notes, asks questions, and engages in discussion (led by the inner circle). **This unit will be purely taught by each other - you are the experts on your assigned chapters!

INSTRUCTIONS:

 Form a group of 4-5 (or Miss Ryan will find a group for you) – each of you will have a focus (job) during the chapters that you are in charge of presenting; you may choose who will get which job as a group.

 You and your group will be responsible for presenting on a section of the novel on an assigned presentation day; your presentation will be focused on approximately 40-50 pages of the novel; you will randomly select your chapters.

 You are responsible for being present on the day that your group signs up for; there will be no make-up days for this assignment; if you are not here, your group will present without you.

 Keep in mind, you will only have one period to present as a group; therefore, each job should take 7-10 minutes (EXCEPT the discussion director – the discussion my take up to 25 minutes).

 You will be marked 100% INDIVIDUALLY on this assignment.

 Regardless of which job you choose, YOU MUST INCORPORATE VISUALS (visuals provided by YOU for YOUR role), and MAKE AN EFFORT TO MAKE YOUR PRESENTATION AS CREATIVE, ENGAGING, AND INTERESTING AS POSSIBLE… otherwise it will be extremely boring for your classmates to watch 

 You are being marked on your presentation, AS WELL as your participation during ALL literary circles (refer to the rubric); therefore you must be present for all presentations, and you MUST make an effort to participate in discussion each day in order to do well on this assignment. ENG3U Kite Runner The Jobs are as follows:

1. Discussion Director: BRIEFLY summarizes chapters covered (no more than a 2-3 minutes for this!!); develops deep questions for the group to discuss; critical thinking questions; questions that require some thought; he/she is also primarily responsible for directing discussion; for example:  making sure each person has their turn to speak;  gently reminding that it’s someone else’s turn when anyone talks too long;  guiding the conversation from one person to another;  “recapping” what’s been said (when needed);  you are also welcome to share/contribute your own thoughts to the conversation.

2. Investigator: Researches the text, elements of the text, unfamiliar words/ideas/locations/cultures/customs/traditions/laws – basically anything that will help us better understand the novel; presents the information in creative, engaging ways.

3. Literary Element Illuminator: Focuses on finding literary elements in the text and dissecting them.  symbols, motifs, imagery (etc.) – be careful not to overlap with theme and character developer!!  key passages that have particular importance

4. Connector: Looks for connections between the text and other elements of experience.  text-to-text  text-to-self  text-to-world/society  text-to-media ** You do NOT need to find all of these connections; you may choose to simply focus on a couple.

5. Theme and Character Developer: Focuses on working through what the author is trying to tell/teach his audience.  What is the message in the story?  How is the message further developed in these chapters? Also focuses on character development.  Looking at key characters and how they've developed  Parallelisms between characters and/or important differences  Use your imagination to deepen the understanding of key characters.
