1. GENERAL INFORMATION

1.4. Organization

Structure 1.4.1. General assembly of the section is convened once in two years. The 7-member Committee is elected by the General assembly. President of the section is elected by the members of the Committee. Regular meetings of the Committee take place once in three months.

1.4.2. The section’s place of business is located in BIBIANA - International House of Art for Children. BIBIANA is organizationally subordinated to the Ministry of Culture of Slovak Republic.

1.4.3. The activities of the Slovak Section of IBBY are performed by one employee who is also charged with other tasks within BIBIANA.

1.4.4. General assembly of the section is convened once in two years. Regular meetings of the Committee take place once in three months.

Membership 1.4.5. No collective members are organized in the Section. The Section cooperates with all organizations in Slovakia within its scope of interest (children book publishing houses, libraries, associations of book authors, universities, etc.). All events, meetings and prize awards are organized in cooperation with these institutions.

1 1.4.6. The section has 98 individual members. The members are currently informed of the IBBY activities and are invited to participate in the activities of the Section. All of the members take by mail free copies of BIBIANA magazine - a review of fine arts for youth (an official section’s paper).

1.4.7. Our members are teachers (20%), publishers (20%), professionals (20%), authors (15%), illustrators (15%), librarians (10%).

1.4.8. We have no categories of membership.

2. FUNDING

2.1. The IBBY Slovak Section’s annual budget represents a part of BIBIANA’s finances granted by the Ministry of Culture of SR. It is SKK 800,000 ($42,000). It depends on the BIBIANA budget.

2.2. Sources if income 2.2.1. Annual fee due from an individual member is SKK 100.

2.2.2. A financial contribution by co-organizers is a common way of financing some regular activities. Other sponsorships and grants for particular projects are not regular.

2.2.6. The Slovak Section of IBBY’s Secretariat is part of an organization who uses financial resources from the SR state budget. According to Slovak law, organizations of this type are not allowed to run any business activity.

3. THE NATIONAL SECTION’S ACTIVITIES

3.1. Main activities 3.1.1. We have organized Days of Children’s Book for as long as 20 years as a part of International Day of Children’s Book activities. The program of this happening

2 includes mainly meetings of writers and illustrators with children in schools and libraries, professional seminars for teachers and juvenile departments of libraries’ workers, and other activities regarding juvenile books. Year by year, Days of Children’s Book take place in different regions of Slovakia, and the meeting has a good respondency among both children and adults. In 2007 it took place in the city Prievidza, this year in Rimavska Sobota. At a nationwide Slovak seminar titled “Literary and Illustration Production for Children and Young People” (March 2007, 2008), we regularly assess the literary, illustration, and dramatic production for a previous year.

3.1.3. All of our activities are of nationwide character.

3.1.4. Every year, we exhibit the books awarded in the competition for “The Finest and the Best Children’s Books of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter in Slovakia” at the event titled “Days of Children’s Book” and at the international book fair Bibliotheca (November 2006 and 2007).

3.1.5. The section co-organizes the following prize competitions and competitive shows: Cena Trojruza (Prize of Three Roses) – for a work of literature that made a significant contribution to the development of Slovak literature for children and the young people. Prizewinners: 2006 - Jozef Ponec, Viliam Obert in memoriam, Peter Sevcovic in memoriam, 2007 – Viktor Krupa and Ján Sedlák in memoriam. Cena Ludovita Fullu (Ľudovít Fulla’s Prize) – for works of art that significantly contributed to the development of Slovak art of illustration for children and young people. Prize holders: 2006 – Blanka Votavova , 2007 – Igor Piacka. The Best and Most Beautiful Books of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter in Slovakia - prizes for the most valuable juvenile books published by Slovak publishing houses.

3.1.7. The Days of Children’s Book are the most successful event organized by the Section – see 3.1.1.

3.2. Communication 3.2.1. Information on the Slovak IBBY Section’s activities can be seen both in Slovak and English languages on the Internet URL www.bibiana.sk.

3.1.3. BIBIANA - revue o umeni pre deti a mladez (BIBIANA - Review of Arts for Children and Young People), an official periodical of the Slovak IBBY Section, is published quarterly since 1993 in BIBIANA - International House of Arts for Children. The magazine brings articles, studies, interviews and columns with English summary. We send copies of the magazine to the IBBY Secretariat, the Bookbird magazine office, International Youth Library in Munich, and to some other foreign institutions which, in return, send us their magazines. Since 2008 Bibiana Review has been presented on our webside.

3 3.2.4. We do not publish any publications.

3.2.5. We make the results of book competitions public through the press on a regular basis; the information bearing on the Section’s activities sporadically appear on the radio, and on TV from time to time (less frequently).

3.3. Cooperation at the National Level

3.3.1. The IBBY Section cooperates with a wide circle of experts from the field of artistic production for children and young people. These experts are higher education teachers, printing and publishing workers, and workers of libraries.

4. COOPERATION WITH IBBY

4.1. International Activities in Cooperation with IBBY

Congresses and General Assemblies 4.1.1. The 30th IBBY Congress in Macau was attended by: Mr. Jan Uliciansky, Section President.

4.1.2. No

International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) 4.1.3. As a part of ICBD activities we organize Days of Children’s Book. Conf. 3.1.1.

4.1.4. No

4.1.5. Paper we deliver to journalists, libraries, children’s books publishers and others.

IBBY Awards and Projects 4.1.6. On a regular basis, we nominate candidates for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. 2006 – Mr. Lubomír Feldek as author, Mr. Martin Kellenberger as illustrator. 2008 – Mr. Jan Navratil as author, Ms. Olga Bajusova as illustrator.

4.1.7. On a regular basis, we submit nominees for the IBBY Honour List For IBBY Honour List 2008 we niminated: Mr. Erik Jakub Groch, a writer, for the book Píšťalkár (‘The Piper’); Mr. Dusan Kallay and Ms. Kamila Štanclova illustrators for the book Rozpravky H. Ch. Andersena (‘Hans Christian Andersen´s Fairy Tales’); and Ms. Jarmila Samcova, a translator, for the book by Forrest Carter: The Little Tree.

4.1.8. No

4.1.9. We nominate Slovak books for IBBY Documentation Centre’s projects in Norway.

4 4.1.10. In 2006 we sent two books and Efeta, a scientific and specialist magazine dedicated to comprehensive rehabilitation of handicapped people.

4.1.11. In the given period we have not hosted any IBBY exhibition.. The Library of BIBIANA’s collection contains the books awarded the IBBY Honour List 1990-2006; we exhibit these books e.g. at our Days of Children’s Book.

Bookbird and others projects 4.1.12. No

4.1.13. Dr. Lubica Kepstova, a member of the section’s committee and a deputy editor of Slniečko (Little Sun), a children’s monthly, is Slovak associate editors.

4.1.14. We regularly cooperate with the International Youth Library, Munich. Beside BIBIANA magazine, we regularly send to the library books for children and the young awarded in the competitions ”The Best and Most Beautiful Children’s Books” and ”The Most Beautiful Books of Slovakia”.

4.2. Cooperation with other National Sections

4.2.1. In September 10th, 2007 an establishing session of the European Regional Group of IBBY national sections was held during the Biennial of Illustrations in Bratislava. The session was participated by members from 13 countries (Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Croatia, Ireland, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Great Britain). In 2008 the session of the European Regional Group was participated by our vice- president of the Slovak IBBY section Ms. Lubica Kepstova during the Bologna Book Fair.

4.2.2. Occasionally, we collaborate with the Czech IBBY Section. We organize the nomination and actual participation of illustrations at BIBs in cooperation with other national IBBY sections.

4.2.3. We send our BIBIANA magazine to a number of other sections in exchange for their magazines.

4.2.4. Obstacles consist primarily of the lack of funds.

5. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

We sent our nominations for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Awards 2007 – the writer Mr. Lubomir Feldek, 2008 – the writer Mr. Jan Navratil.
