Procedure: Since the students does not speak English, the teacher will be doing a lot of repetition and pantomiming with the student. She will be shown how to write the letter b and will need to produce it on her own as well. To begin, the teacher will give a mini lesson on some survival English. This will all be spoken due to the student’s ability level. The teacher will speak with the student and have her repeat. Some of the survival English will include “hello, my name is”. The teacher will also teach the student the words for bathroom and nurse. Then, the teacher will introduce the letter B. This will be said and asked to be repeated several times. The teacher will write the letter on the board as well. The teacher will make the sound “b” that goes with the letter. That will also be repeated several times. Words that begin with the letter b will be introduced to the student either through flash cards or through clip art. The teacher will go through each picture and say the word to the student. This will be repeated a minimum of 3 times. The student will be asked to repeat the words with the teacher, and then the teacher will try pointing to some pictures to see if the student can say them on her own. As a small game, the teacher will have the clip art pictures cut out. The teacher will have them mixed up on the table. The teacher will say a word, and the student will be asked to find the matching picture. The game can be adapted once the student becomes more comfortable with the vocabulary.

Assessment: Assessment is on-going and informal. The teacher can see if the student is grasping any of the new vocabulary during the game. Since the student is a POE student, it may take her a while to feel comfortable saying words in English. The teacher will try to elicit as much English from the student as possible.
