Unicef UK’s fundraising programme doubled in size from 2011-15 and we are now working on an ambitious five-year plan for 2016–20 aiming to increase the funds we raise for children by 61%. With this growth has come an increased complexity to the size and scale of our fundraising programme.

The Director(s) of Fundraising Strategy and Knowledge oversee the evolution of our fundraising strategy, insight, research and strategic projects. You will work alongside the Deputy Executive Director, Fundraising and the Directors of Individual Giving and Partnerships & Philanthropy to provide oversight of the fundraising strategy and its implementation, and help to ensure that the organisation achieves its goals for children.

Background

Unicef UK is a registered charity in the UK raising funds for Unicef’s vital work for children and advocating for children’s rights both nationally and internationally. It is one of 35 Unicef national committees in the industrialised world and one of the largest and fastest growing in terms of income.

To continue growing and to meet ambitious income targets that will see Unicef UK generate £164m per annum by 2020, the post of Director of Fundraising Strategy has been created to provide strategic direction and support for the development of Unicef UK’s fundraising strategy. The role also takes the lead in developing and managing associated elements of the Joint Strategic Plan with Unicef Private Fundraising & Partnerships (PFP) team in Geneva. The post holder will work closely with the Directors of Individual Giving and High Value Partnerships to drive ongoing integration between these functions and across the wider organisation to ensure relationships, opportunities and value are maximised over the long-term.

Responsibilities

Management

 Manage the Fundraising Strategic Planning, Data Analysis and Leadership Relationships teams within the spirit of ‘Common Approach’, ensuring that one-to-one meetings and appraisals, and learning and development opportunities are taken forward and ensuring that Team Heads and Managers do the same with their own teams.

 Develop and promote a positive Fundraising Strategy and Knowledge Team culture, motivating and supporting individuals and encouraging collaboration and integration across these teams and the wider organisation.

Strategy, Planning and Reporting

 Lead the planning process across the Fundraising Directorate and to ensure integration across departments. Work with the Deputy Executive Director, Fundraising and the Directors of Individual Giving and Partnerships & Philanthropy in the development and evolution of Unicef UK’s fundraising strategy to underpin our ambitious income growth.

 Lead on establishing key performance indicators both on income quantity as well as quality with a focus on sustainable income and committed support.  Lead on the measurement, monitoring and communication of our performance effectively to stakeholders across the organisation from Fundraising Teams to the Executive Team. Take responsibility for monitoring and evaluation, including responsibility for coordinating and developing monthly campaign and dashboard reporting, as well as management account variance reporting.

 Provide strategic and financial decision support to senior management teams to underpin income growth.

 Deliver insightful research and work with teams on deeper analysis of their programmes to support and drive growth in fundraising.

 Lead on the development and implantation of a rolling programme of product analysis and project reviews, timed to feed into the annual (or biennial) planning cycle. Ensure that reviews happen in a timely manner to inform planning and decision making and in particular investment decisions.

 Lead on the development and implementation of a new product development programme based on product and market analysis to support the Fundraising directorate in meeting the financial targets laid out within the plan.

Fundraising Leadership

 Support senior staff and the Trustees in Unicef UK to understand fundraising plans and performance.

 Champion the use of external perspective, insight and intelligence across fundraising. Create and maintain a bank of insight and intelligence around key market trends and drive the use of this insight to exploit existing fundraising opportunities. Coordinate the current INGO benchmarking and ensure that Unicef UK derives maximum learnings to inform future strategy and programme development.

 Ensure that the Fundraising Strategy sits at the core of the directorate, working alongside the Deputy Executive Director, Fundraising. Establish, embed and develop cross-team ways of working, standards, culture and systems.

Communication

 Communicate the Fundraising Strategy across Unicef UK and other appropriate stakeholder groups, in collaboration with the Director of Communications and fundraising Heads. Advise how messages and information should be adapted or translated for the different audience group.

 Keep abreast of key fundraising trends and issues and the regulatory environment around fundraising. Ensuring that standards are set, procedures followed and issues acted upon or communicated to Directors and others as appropriate.

Relationships

 Ensure that systems and processes best support fundraising activity, working closely with the Chief Operating Officer and their team heads (IT, Facilities, Finance).

 Manage relationships with Unicef Geneva based international contacts with a focus on Investment Funds and Joint Strategic Plans.  Build and maintain significant relationships with suppliers, key industry bodies (IoF, PFRA, FRSB etc.) and network across the sector.

Digital

 Open to exploring digital media and tools to support Unicef UK to achieve better results for children

Structure

The role is split into a job share, one of 4 days a week and one of 2¼ days a week. Whilst the post holders are jointly accountable across the role, the following are the focuses of the two splits:
