1 [1268-1] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO ENDORSE THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE 12 CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION 13 (CDC) AND AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS (AAP) 14 FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS REGARDING THE 15 BEST PRACTICES FOR THE JUDICIOUS USE OF 16 ANTIBIOTICS. 17 18 Whereas, antibiotic-resistant infections are more likely to produce 19 adverse health outcomes and are more costly to treat than 20 susceptible infections; and 21 22 Whereas, the widespread use of antibiotics has increased the type 23 and incidence of bacteria that are resistant to treatment by 24 antibiotics; and 25 26 Whereas, antibiotic resistance is caused by the overuse of 27 antibiotics in general, with overuse of selected agents in particular; 28 and 29 30 Whereas, over the past five years the rate of penicillin resistance 31 increased by more than three hundred percent and the rate of 32 cefotaxime resistance increased by more than one thousand 33 percent; and 34 35 Whereas, patients infected with antibiotic-resistant strains of 36 bacteria can require hospitalization when otherwise unnecessary 37 and be subject to an increased rate of death; and 38 39 Whereas, the process of creating antibiotic-resistance increases 40 pharmaceutical costs through inappropriate prescribing of 41 antibiotic agents and increases total healthcare costs through the

1 [1268] 1 1 additional hospitalization and other forms of additional medical 2 care required in the treatment of resistant strains of bacteria; and 3 4 Whereas, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 5 (CDC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have 6 developed recommendations for health care professionals 7 regarding the best practices for the judicious use of antibiotics. 8 Now, therefore, 9 10 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 11 concurring: 12 13 That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this 14 resolution, endorses the CDC/AAP recommendations and urges 15 each health care professional and managed care plan operating in 16 the State to adopt the recommendations in their practice and 17 formularies. 18 ----XX----
