COURSE OVERVIEW Course Description: This course is a continuation and enhancement of the study of Spanish 1. A review of Spanish 1 is followed by continued study of the target language and cultures, with emphasis on vocabulary development, language structure, and aural/oral and written comprehension of the Spanish language.

Course Goals/Objectives: At the end of the course, students are expected to: · Engage in conversations in Spanish; express feelings, ideas and exchange opinions · Demonstrate understanding of spoken and written Spanish on a variety of topics · Present information and ideas in verbal and written Spanish to classmates and outside the school setting · Apply knowledge of Spanish language and cultures to enhance knowledge of other disciplines · Utilize technology such as video, audio, internet activities to further learning and comprehension of the target language · Provide information in spoken and written form on a variety of topics of personal, academic, and cultural interest · Understand how idiomatic expressions have an impact on communication and reflect culture, by learning them correctly in both oral and written form · Effectively communicate verbally in Spanish regarding a past, present or future event · Acquire knowledge and understanding of various aspects of the arts, music, literature, cultural traditions, history and economics of the Spanish-speaking world · Understand cultural traditions and celebrations in country-region Spain and Latin America. · Understand how learning another language allows people to function more effectively in multilingual communities

Required Materials and Supplies: Textbook, Composition notebook or Folder (with fastener) paper (college ruled) pen/pencil, paper, A Spanish/English dictionary . Note cards, colors, and posters are required various times during the year.

Supplemental Reading Materials: Handouts will be distributed in class. Method of Evaluation: Grading Scale: Classwork/Homework 40% Test 25% Projects/Products/Notebook 20% Six Week Exam 15%

Tutoring: Monday to Friday 3:30 to 4:00pm or by appointment.

INSTITUTIONAL POLICIES: Make-up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up assignments from teachers following an excused or unexcused absence. In general, two days are given to complete daily work missed for each day of excused absence. For extended illness, the student will be limited to a total of 5 school days following their return to make up work missed. Exceptions to this rule can be made through special arrangements with the teacher or administration. No make-up credit will be allowed for unexcused absences.

TEST: We will have a quiz at the end of each instructional week. Also, we will have a Six Weeks Test during the last week of each Six Weeks. Tests that have been scheduled in advance and long-term assignments need to be completed within a reasonable period of time per the agreement with all parties. Teachers may establish specific guidelines related to long- term assignments on an individual class basis. Dependent upon individual teacher policies, students may miss the opportunity to earn daily participation points for non- school related absences.

Academic Dishonesty: Students are expected to maintain academic honesty and integrity at all times throughout their high school career. Academic dishonesty (as in cheating or plagiarism) is not acceptable. Cheating includes copying another student’s work and submitting it as one’s own. Plagiarism is the use of another person’s original ideas or writing without giving credit to the true author. A student who engages in any form of academic dishonesty will be subject to the loss of credit for the work in question, as well as other disciplinary measures. Repeated occurrences could result in the student being removed from the class with no credit.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Please be in your assigned seat by the beginning of class. Come prepared for class. Assignments are due at the beginning of class. No food is allowed in class. Use the restroom/get a drink of water during passing period. Retest on tests with scores below 80% before the next scheduled test. Retests are averaged with the first test. You are expected to do your own work. Students caught cheating or helping others cheat will receive ZERO credit. RESPECT yourself, others (classmates and teachers), and your surroundings (clean up after yourself, don’t vandalize). Please remain seated in your own seat until you are dismissed.
