Appendix A: Student Assessment

Spanish Immersion Student Assessment: Students in the Spanish Immersion program are assessed by the same measurement instruments as students in other non-Spanish Immersion programs. Additional assessments that are administered to the Spanish Immersion students are the HERSI/HILS in Spanish in grades 1st through 5th. The oral language proficiency of Spanish Students are also assessed with the Woodcock Muñoz Language Survey in their oral language Spanish proficiency in grades 1st through 5th.

Spanish Immersion Student Assessment Findings: Since the establishment of the Spanish Immersion program, Spanish Immersion students were not clearly flagged within the PEIMS system. Spanish oral language proficiency of students has not previously been formally evaluated. Spanish reading levels have been evaluated but have not been reported consistently at the district level. Spanish Immersion Student Assessment Plan : Spanish Immersion students will be flagged so as to be able to evaluate student performance data on state assessments. Allowing for the evaluation of this student data will provide both the district and campuses information by which instructional and programmatic decisions can be made. Students will be assessed in their Spanish reading proficiency in both the fall and the spring of each school year in 2 nd grade and higher. Student performance levels will be reported at the district level. Spanish oral language proficiency data will be gathered in the fall of the 2014 school year and students will be assessed thereafter each spring so as to monitor progress of students and effectiveness of the program.
