Page 3 of 8 January 2012 GARLAND GOOD SAMS CAMPOUT LAZY L RV PARK, SHERMAN, TEXAS Dec 9-11, 2011 By: Jo Ellen Blair The party started early on Wednesday when the Brushs, Beans and Pittmans arrived to decorate the party room. When others arrived, they were welcomed with a festive setting for all of our Christmas party activities. Thank you for all of your work for the rest of us to enjoy. Also, arriving on Wednesday were John and Bobbie McCurry, Bud and Elaine Toleos, and the Blairs. Lou Brush graciously provided a delicious chili supper for all of us. You can’t beat chili on a cold winter night. The dinner was complete with the sweet potato pies A C Blair brought. The evening was a good start for the weekend. A cold morning greeted us on Thursday but we were warmed by so many more friends arriving. The Thomas’ arrived mid-morning in their new rig; a 32 foot 2002 Mountaineer. It has been so well maintained it looks new. Joe and Sylvia, wishing you many happy campouts in your new rig! The Irby’s, Thurman’s, and Fielding’s had arrived by noon. Charles Roy and Mable Gilmore drove in and staying at the Comfort Suites up the road. Mr. and Mrs. Santa (Don and Shirl Prater) arrived mid-afternoon. Don Prater is a Texas Santa; tall, slim, gunslinger type, wearing his cowboy boots and hat with Santa’s hat on top. Instead of reindeer pulling his sleigh it is pulled by a big Freightliner semi. Yeah, Texan alright! After an afternoon of visiting, playing games and eating Christmas goodies, we adjourned to Huck’s fish restaurant. Those folks sure know how to fry catfish; crispy and light, moist on the inside. The sides were delicious as well. Friday there was so many folks coming in I couldn’t keep up with them. We ended up with 20 rigs, including the Arnolds, Beasleys, Clevengers, Delmars, Dickeys, Dolbys, Powells, Prices, and Wendy Sheriff. We all headed down to the China Buffet for dinner and there was a room full. The food was absolutely delicious. Best Chinese buffet I have ever eaten. Ed Dolby was in heaven with all the crab legs he could eat. He must have eaten a lot because, I have been told, when he left to go back to camp he had a step stool to get in the truck. He got in then realized he couldn’t reach down far enough to pick up the stool so a little old lady came by and offered to hand him the stool. He was so embarrassed he hopped down to retrieve the stool and then managed to climb in the truck and regain his dignity. Saturday morning Don Prater conducted the Installation of officers for 2012. Those being installed were Paul Pittman, President; A C Blair, Vice President; Sheryl Hazelwood, Secretary; Lou Brush, Treasurer; Kyle Clevenger, Wagon Master. Don used a Christmas tree and hanging of ornaments to illustrate each office. The President’s ornament is a large, shiny red one that goes at the top of the tree. The Vice President’s is also red and goes just under the President’s. The Secretary’s is blue and goes to one side of the tree; the Treasurer’s is green and goes on the other side of the tree for “balance”; the Wagon master’s is gold to reflect the sunset as members arrive late in the afternoon. It hangs where it can be seen by all. A special thanks to these officers who have agreed to serve our Chapter in these positions for the coming year.

Page 4 of 8 January 2012 The appointed positions are: Mable Gilmore will continue as Editor of our Newsletter. She has been our Editor, on and off, for 14 years. What would we ever do without her? Thank you Mable, for an outstanding job! Dottie Bothwell will continue as our Sunshine Lady. She has held this position for several years. This position requires a kind, compassionate, loving person so Dottie is a perfect person for this job. Joe Thomas will be retiring from his position of Chaplin. Thank you Joe, for the many inspirational messages over the past years! Phillip Powell will be coming in to take the Chaplin position. We are looking forward to Phillip’s devotionals. Wanda Price will continue to provide the keyboard. Thanks Wanda for being our musician. Charles Roy Gilmore will continue as Yearbook chairman. Thanks Charles Roy for your continued contribution. Wanda Price will continue as Historian. She has worked diligently to get the records in order and bring us a bit of our Chapter history each month. Thanks Wanda for a job well done. Board members for the coming year will be Oma Bean, Jo Ellen Blair, Wayne Brush, Jay Delmar, and Raymond Hazelwood. New shoes: Some shoes can not be filled by others, such as the shoes of Wayne and Lou Brush who have faithfully served our Chapter as President and Mrs. President for 6 of the last 10 years. We can never adequately express our thanks for all the hard work, time, effort and monetary resources you have given to our Chapter. Our hope is that you can feel our gratitude, appreciation, and love for you in your heart. The new officers coming in will have to establish their own roles and leadership. However, they do pledge to continue the two goals you established (1) maintain harmony, (2) enjoyment of camping. Every effort will be made to provide the leadership and high standards that you have demonstrated to us. Christmas brunch: Following the Installation of Officers, we quickly set up the Christmas brunch. As usual, it was all delicious and many could be heard exclaiming, “I ate too much”. Driving in for the day was the Bothwells, Hazelwoods, Christine Beauchamp and her friend Doris Murphy, and Beverly Combs and her husband, John (daughter of Joe and Sylvia). The rest of the day was spent visiting and playing games until time to eat again. Christmas Dinner: Our dinner was held in downtown Sherman at Benjamin’s restaurant which is part of Kelly Square. This was quite an interesting place. The building dates back to the 1890’s and was originally four buildings. It was bought in 1916 by a trunk salesman, Leo Kelly, who had a common brick façade placed on the front of all four buildings creating the effect of one large building. The interior is reminiscence of a grand old hotel. It is actually a unique shopping mall. Benjamin’s is one of two restaurants and banquet facilities. It was beautifully decorated and the white tablecloths were especially appreciated. The food was exceptionally good and plentiful. The service was outstanding. It was a very enjoyable dining experience. The guys all looked sharp in their suits and ties, the ladies elegant in holiday/evening attire. Thank you, Wayne and Lou for making all the arrangements for this wonderful evening.

Page 5 of 8 January 2012 Following the dinner, most everyone drove through the Christmas light display which was exceptionally good for the small town. It set a festive mood for the rest of the evening. Undivided Hearts: The six ladies who comprise Undivided Hearts were here to entertain us for their second year. More than entertainment, it was a time of sharing with us their life experiences and music. It was a message that there is hope even in unimaginable hardship and grief. In time healing and joy can be restored to those who trust in the Lord. We were so fortunate to have these exceptional, talented young women share their evening with us. Again, thank you, Wayne and Lou for arranging their time with us. Gift exchange: The last event of the evening was our gift exchange. We are all children at heart when we receive a wrapped Christmas gift. First there is evaluation of the package, how big it is, how heavy, and does it rattle. Then there is anticipation as it is being opened. Then, once it is seen, the eyes light up in delight or the chin drops to the chest in disappointment.

There were more than these reactions when Wayne Brush opened a gift from an anonymous donor and it was a 1,000 piece puzzle of the face of Obama, ASTONISHMENT. The puzzle was worth a few dollars, the expression on Wayne’s face, priceless! I’m sure Wayne is staying up at night putting his puzzle together. Thanks everyone for your cards and gifts. An extra thank you to the anonymous little elves that brought extra little gifts that we found on our doorsteps or in our baskets. Those are so enjoyable to receive. Thank you, Lou Brush and Lucille Bean for all your work in decorating, organizing, preparing for and cleaning up for this wonderful party. This completes our campouts for the year. We are looking forward to the New Year and many happy campouts to come. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

I just got my new cell phone, and it's one that I can understand, outsmart, and have the know how to operate!!! I got it at the "Verizon Cell Phone for Seniors" at the mall! You really have to be MATURE(?) to appreciate this. I know some of you are not old enough to get this, but you can show it to some old person who is.
