Intermediate or Advanced Spanish and Latin American Culture in Buenos Aires, Argentina June 23-July 25, 2008

This five-week program at Universidad de San Andrés offers intensive Spanish instruction in Buenos Aires, Argentina and is addressed to students interested in improving their Spanish skills and expanding their understanding of Latin American and Argentine culture. Taking advantage of the full-immersion situation, students will be able to use Spanish in increasingly more complex, real life situations and daily routines. Buenos Aires unique and vibrant cultural life will be integrated into the program through visits to museums and extracurricular activities. A three-day trip to Iguazú Falls is offered as optional. Students can enroll as individuals or as part of a group at their home institutions, and they will live with Argentine families, which will let them to be in contact with local customs and help them acquire language proficiency for professional, academic, or personal needs.

The program is offered in two levels: Intermediate and Advanced. Completion of at least two semesters of Spanish (about 120 hours) or a similar level of language proficiency is a prerequisite for Intermediate level, which consists of two courses:

 Spanish Language and Grammar (Spanish 135). This course focuses on linguistic functions and grammar structures, writing practices, vocabulary, and reading abilities (3 credits).

 Spanish Culture and Conversation on Latin American Topics (Spanish 137). This course covers oral communication and comprehension, and includes audio visual resources, such as film, music, TV, and literature employed to explore the relationship between language and culture (3 credits).

The Advanced level requires completion of at least two years of Spanish (or about 240 hours). The courses offered are:

 Argentine Literature in Cultural Context (Spanish 217). This course explores the different representations and approaches to Argentine society through literary production, criticism and cultural history. (3 credits)  Contemporary Argentine and Latin American Film (Spanish 242). This course examines Contemporary Argentine and Latin American Film in its historical context. (3 credits)

Courses will take place at the Universidad de San Andrés campus in Victoria, one-hour away from downtown Buenos Aires. Enrolment in the program includes all teaching materials and full access to the University facilities. Students who successfully pass the courses will receive 3 credits for each class, to be presented at their home universities. Those students who plan to spend a semester at Universidad de San Andrés will be able to take regular courses, taught fully in Spanish. Tuition for the Intermediate or Advanced Spanish Program is USD 1,600.
