Chemical Hygiene Plan
Project ICP ISOBARIC PROJECT
Name: Asopuru Okemgbo
This plan covers the period from August 2000 to December 2000
I. Site Specific Responsibility for Chemical Hygiene and Safety Room ______, Bldg. ______Washington State University,Tri-Cities Lab Responsibility and contacts: Dr. Gene Schreckhise, Associate Dean, Lezlie Couch, Laboratory Coordinator 372-7163 Project Contact ______e-mail______Work Phone______Home Phone______
II. Chemical receiving room is 118. All chemicals will be logged into the chemical inventory list and will be picked up in this room, unless otherwise arranged.
III. Labeling will be done with permanent marker on chemical resistant label and will contain the chemical name, concentration, date made, hazard warnings, and name or initials of person responsible for transfer. See example below.
IV. List of chemicals used in this study and MSDS’s are attached. All chemicals must be inventoried as they arrive, and before they are used.
A Laboratory Safety Manual is located in the lab used for this project, Room ______, and in room 118. A Safety Policies and Procedures Manual is located in room 118.
V. Floor plan for the lab used for this project is located in Laboratory Safety Manual, Room______.
VI. Ventilation systems to be used are available in Room ______. Before using the hood, it will be turned on and functioning properly. All pouring and mixing will be done in the hoods unless otherwise specified in this plan.
-All ventilation hoods will be inspected and maintained by a trained technician annually. -Maintenance logs will be maintained for each hood with inspection and maintenance intervals. -Handling equipment and materials will be done at least 6 inches inside the hood. -In case of hood failure, call physical plant immediately and notify Lezlie Couch, 372-7163. -Labsoak or equivalent will be used unless otherwise arranged by Lezlie Couch, 372-7163.
VII. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are required for each “Hazardous Material” listed. A separate SOP form should be completed for each chemical underlined in IV Section. Use the blank attached form to make as many copies as necessary. You may include the sample sheets if you have common flammable solvents or common corrosive chemical acids.
VIII. Include a brief overview of the study. Please include all experimental protocols.

1. PROCESS SAMPLE PREPARATION FOR ION EXCHANGE SEPARTION OF METALS 2. HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL Zirconium, Palladium, Cobalt, Silver, Nickel, Bismuth, Sodium, Chromium, Iron, Aluminum, Niobium ions (all in mineral acid solution) 3. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE Wear goggles, protective apron and acid resistant gloves. Use EQUIPMENT under fume hood. In case of brief exposure, use MSHA/NIOSH approved respirator.
4. ENGINEERING/ Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at work place VENTILATION CONTROLS
5. SPECIAL HANDLING Have an immediate availability of an eye wash in case of PROCEDURES AND emergency. Store at room temperature. Keep the container STORAGE tightly closed. REQUIREMENTS
6. SPILL AND ACCIDENT Ventilate area. Wear protective equipment. Do not allow to PROCEDURES enter drainage systems or water ways. Dilute spill with water and neutralize with soda ash, limestone etc. Wipe up and put into a sealed container for proper disposal. Wash spill site with water after material pick up is complete. Wear chemical resistant glasses, gloves and clothing.
7. WASTE DISPOSAL Contact local Hazardous or Chemical waste disposal agency for regulations.
8. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR ANIMAL USE Standard Operating Procedures for Hazardous Chemicals
7. PROCESS Sample preparation conversion of Cobalt II to Cobalt III 8. HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL Diphonix Resin
9. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE Safety glasses, lab coat, protective gloves EQUIPMENT
10. ENGINEERING/ Normal general ventilation should be sufficient VENTILATION CONTROLS
11. SPECIAL HANDLING Practice reasonable care and caution. Allow room PROCEDURES AND for expansion when packing columns with resin. STORAGE Metal equipment should be compatible with feed, REQUIREMENTS regenerant, resin form and effuluent of process
12. SPILL AND ACCIDENT Sweep up material and transfer to suitable container PROCEDURES for disposal. Surface may be slippery
9. WASTE DISPOSAL Bury resin in licensed landfill or burn in approved incinerator according to local, state and federal regulations. For resin contaminated with hazardous material, dispose of mixture as hazardous material according to local, state and federal regulations
10. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS none FOR ANIMAL USE Standard Operating Procedures for Hazardous Chemicals
13. PROCESS Sample preparation conversion of Cobalt II to Cobalt III. 14. HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL Phosphonic acid
15. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE Respiratory Protection: WEAR NIOSH/MSHA APPROVED EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENT WHEN AIRBORNE EXPOSURE IS EXCESSIVE. Protective Gloves: REQUIRED Eye Protection: SAFETY GLASSES
16. ENGINEERING/ Ventilation: MECHANICAL (GENERAL) VENTILATION CONTROLS
17. SPECIAL HANDLING Handling/Storing: KEEP CONTAINER CLOSED. USE PROCEDURES AND W/ADEQUATE VENTIL ATION. Other Precautions: DON'T GET IN EYES, ON SKIN/CLOTHING. AVOID STORAGE BREATHING VAPOR/MIST. EMPTY CONTAINER REQUIREMENTS RETAINS VAPOR & PRODUCT RESIDUE. OBSERVE ALL LABELED SAFEGUARDS UNTIL CONTAINER IS CLEANED, RECONDITIONED/DESTROYED.
18. SPILL AND ACCIDENT Steps If Matl Released/Spill: CONTAIN TO PREVENT PROCEDURES DISCHARGE TO ENVIRONMENT. ABSORB W/CLAY/SAWDUST/OTHER ABSORBENT MATERIAL. PLACE ALL MATERIAL, CONTAMINATED ABSORBENT/DIRT/MATERIAL IN DRUMS. KEEP CONCENTRATED PRODUCT OUT OF SEWERS, WATERSHEDS & WATER SYSTEMS. (SEE SUPP)
11. WASTE DISPOSAL Waste Disposal Method: DISPOSE OF IAW/FEDERAL, STATE & LOCAL REGULATIONS. DISPOSAL BY INCINERATION IS RECOMMENDED. CORROSIVE MATERIAL UN1760
