NAME POSITION TITLE Sherine A. Aly MD, PhD Associate Professor eRA COMMONS USER NAME SHERINEALY EDUCATION/TRAINING DEGREE INSTITUTION AND LOCATION YEAR(s) FIELD OF STUDY (if applicable) Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt MD 1994 Medicine Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt MS 2000 Medical Microbiology Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt PhD 2004 Medical Microbiology

A. Personal Statement I am a physician/ microbiologist with over than 16 years of research experience in molecular biology during which I have been working on different topics of medical microbiology and immunology. In addition I have ten years of experience as a consultant in the Medical Microbiology Laboratory of Assiut University Hospitals Infection Control Unit. My research interest is dedicated to elucidate the genetic mechanism underlying antimicrobial resistance. Our previous work on nosocomial isolates focused on detection the genetic mechanisms responsible for extended-spectrum β-lactamase production in Klebsiella pneumoniae, methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus, and vancomycin resistance in Enterococci. Recently we had a specific focus on fluoroquinolone resistance in different pathogens. In our latest work we were able to detect new mutation in Escherichia coli and to link this mutation to the multidrug resistance. This current proposal on fluoroquinolone resistant Acinetobacter baumannii aims to extend this work to uncover the mechanisms by which fluoroquinolones induce multidrug resistance. Our long term goal is to understand the relationship between the antibiotic treatment and the emergence of MDR derivatives due to mutations in bacterial pathogens and to link our research to our clinical work with the hope of bringing more specific and effective therapies to patients. I am confident that in collaboration with the outstanding Dr. Ismail research team, we will successfully develop and implement new, cost-effective diagnostic strategies aimed at detecting and reducing nosocomial infection and the worldwide spread of MDR A. baumannii.
