2 O Sing Unto the Lord Let the people offer prayer upon entering their pews, kneeling or bowing down. In the Lord’s Name we greet you, praying that the Holy Spirit would bless your hearing of God’s Word with a lively trust in Him who died and rose for you, Jesus Christ our Lord. Use the time prior to the service for silent preparation for worship.  Visitors, consider prayerfully Trinity’s Confession of the Lord’s Supper on the pink bulletin insert.  See front inside cover of LSB for prayers before and after the service, and before and after receiving the Sacrament.  For self-examination before the service, consider the Christian Questions, pages 329, 330 in LSB.  Prepare for the Liturgy by marking the pages and the hymns, reviewing the order of Service, and praying the Collect for the Day. Please leave a record of your visit either in our guest book near the main door or on the guest side of the pink slip in your service folder. Service Notes Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him, yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus—who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven—has sent the Helper, the Spirit of Truth (John 16:5–15). “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights” through Christ (James 1:16–21). The Holy Spirit helps us by taking of what is Christ’s and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth the Spirit works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross. Through the ministry of the Holy

1 Spirit we have been brought forth to new life in Him who is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection with Christ we confess, “Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid” (Isaiah 12:1–6). White, depicting the glory and purity of the risen Lord Jesus, is the color of the Easter Season. Language of the Faith The catholic epistles and Revelation are the last eight books of the New Testament, written to the Church at large by apostles other than Paul.

DIVINE SERVICE, SETTING THREE LSB, page 184 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Hymn of Invocation Our mouths are instruments for praise of our Lord’s sacrifice. LSB 528, “Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” SERVICE OF THE WORD Introit, Psalm 98 We sing a new song because God has made known His salvation. That His salvation is made known is the work of the Holy Spirit. Sing to the LORD a new song, Alleluia, for He has revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations. Alleluia. His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him. He has remembered His steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! 2 Salutation & Collect for Cantate page 189 The ground for our petition is the working of the Spirit in the minds of the faithful; by His work is there unity of believers in loving God’s commands, desiring His promises and fixing the hearts on the true joys in Christ. O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament Reading, Isaiah 12:1-6 We sing with the prophet Isaiah about God’s goodness to us through the waters of Holy Baptism. 1You will say in that day: ”I will give thanks to You, O LORD, for though You were angry with me, Your anger turned away, that You might comfort me. 2Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD God is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation.” 3With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4 And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name, make known His deeds among the peoples, proclaim that His name is exalted. 5Sing praises to the LORD, for He has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. 6Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.” Epistle, James 1:16-21 The good and perfect gift is the Holy Spirit, who in Holy Baptism gave us a new birth with the Word of Truth. This gift is to express itself in our behavior. 16Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18Of His own will He brought

3 us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. 19Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires. 21Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Alleluia & Verse, Psalm 118 & Romans 6 p. 190 The life that Christ lives beyond death, a life lived wholly to God, is the source of our life’s character, direction and purpose. The right hand of the LORD exalts, the right hand of the LORD does valiantly! Alleluia. We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. Gospel, John 16:5-15 Christ speaks of His ascension into Heaven and the sending of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit accomplishes the work of Christ in the Church through the Word and Sacraments. [Jesus said:] 5“But now I am going to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you. 8And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see Me no longer; 11concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify Me,

4 for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is Mine; therefore I said that He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.” (ESV) Nicene Creed page 191 Hymn of the Day We encourage each other to sing of our Lord’s victory. SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT Preface page 194 Proper Preface for Easter The Church rejoices that her Lord, Who bore all sin in His body and destroyed death by His death, has been raised that we might have newness of life today, and eternal life. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. 6 A Mother’s Day Prayer

Heavenly Father, who has said through Your prophet, “As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you,” I thank You for Your steadfast faithfulness and enduring love that exceeds human understanding, and surpasses all human love, even that of a mother’s love for her child. On the strength of this assurance, I am confident that I shall have Your constant guidance, help, support, and protection. On this day I thank You for the gift of Christian mothers. Bless them always, giving to them grace to set before their children Your Word and a godly example in word and deed. Make them aware that their children are a sacred trust from You, and teach them to petition You for encouragement, patience, and devotion. Hold Your protecting hand over them, and strengthen them for every labor, courage for the trials of motherhood, and trust in You that daily grows stronger. Hear our prayers also for those women who long to love as mothers; grant to them patience in their waiting, and open for them in the Body of Christ and among their neighbors opportunities to bestow compassion and devotion. I thank You for the gift of my mother and for her love, which has comforted me. By Your Spirit grant to me the will that I never do anything that would grieve her heart, and may I always follow the godly path that she would walk —the way of Your truth and righteousness. Guide our footsteps that we walk in the love of Christ our Lord, who provided for His mother. Through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

7 The Priesthood Prays God’s Stewards. When man receives God’s gifts of grace, this is an expression of faith, the faith that is given through the Spirit and which appears in the confession of faith. Out of this “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly.” (Colossians 3:16) grace, received through faith, come the gifts of grace. From this it is obvious that the gifts of grace are not identical with our natural “talent.” It is important to consider this in the practical The week of Cantate, Fourth Sunday after Easter: May 10 – May 16 work of stewardship, where we also have great need of using natural talents, which God has provided. We do not have the gifts of grace in the same way that we have or do not have MATINS VESPERS certain talents. The ability to speak is a natural talent; the gifts of grace are something else. Sun Psalm 82 Leviticus 20:1-27 Psalm 126 Luke 11:37-54 The gifts of grace are conferred by the Spirit for certain responsibilities in the congregation; Mon Psalm 15 Leviticus 21:1-22:33 Psalm 123 Luke 12:1-12 and they appear as a result of the proclamation of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:4-9). Missionary Walter Ralli and his family made another trip to Asturias, in northern Spain, May 10, 2009 in February. His time there included a Bible study and the celebration of a worship service. There were nine of us that attended the worship service to witness Daniel Cancio Bodas' confirmation of faith. He is 19 years old and the Holy Spirit has created faith in him through Happy Mother’s Day God's Word. He has been convinced of sin and has experienced immense mercy and grace of God in Christ Jesus.
