Scottish Schools Badminton Union

SCOTTISH SCHOOLS’ BADMINTON UNION INFORMATION BOOKLET 2011-2012 Introduction The Scottish Schools’ Badminton Union was set up in 1968 by the Scottish Badminton Union. In 2003 it became an integral part of BADMINTONscotland. Membership is open to all Primary and Secondary schools in Scotland. Currently (June 2011) there are 160 Secondary schools and 122 Primary schools affiliated to the SSBU. The objects of the SSBU are to:- Promote, encourage and further the growth of the game of badminton in Scottish schools. Promote and organise annually the Scottish Schools’ Championships and other events deemed desirable. Maintain close liaison with the Scottish Schoolsport Federation and all Scottish Education Authorities. Do all other things considered necessary or desirable for the promotion of badminton in Scottish Schools and in the interests of the members of the Union. The SSBU is divided into eighteen “Areas” - Argyll & Bute, Ayrshire, Borders, Central, Dumfries & Galloway, Dunbarton, Dundee & Angus, Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow, Highland, Lanark, Mid & East Lothian, Moray, North East, Perth & Kinross, Renfrew and West Lothian—with the affiliated schools in each Area annually appointing their own Area Organiser to organise Area events. Qualifiers from Area events then go on to take part in National events. National Officials are elected at the Annual General Meeting to which each Area sends their elected voting representative(s) although any affiliated school may send a non-voting representative. The current programme of competitions includes:- For individuals—”Age Group” tournaments plus Primary and Secondary Schools National Championships. For School teams—Quaichs For Area teams—Inter-Area tournaments. Other activities organised each season are coaching squads and a residential coaching course at the Inverclyde National Sports Centre. Information is sent to all affiliated schools at the start of the season in August with the “National” programme plus entry forms and the results for the previous season. Further information on all SSBU “National” activities can be obtained from either the Convenor or the Administrator and on all “Area” activities from your Area Organiser. Entry forms, results and check-in times for competitions can be found on the BADMINTONscotland web-site at www.BADMINTONscotland.org.uk. Age Group Tournaments These tournaments are all NON KNOCK-OUT and aimed at a wide range of abilities. No “Area Qualification” is required but as they are “National” competitions it would be best if, before entering one of them, competitors have previously played in some local “restricted” tournaments. Competitors may play in more then one age group if they wish and, in doubles events, chose a partner from ANY SCHOOL or AREA or put in a “partner wanted” entry. Under 12 AGE GROUP COMPETITION This competition has both singles and doubles events. The competition starts with pools and the finishing positions in the pools are used for a series of knock-out competitions. 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997 and 1994 SINGLES COMPETITIONS: These non knock-out competitions each form part of a “series” of up to eight tournaments, provided there are sufficient entries. Competitors are placed in “divisions” of eight with the starting order for each tournament being based on the finishing order of the previous “Age Group Singles” tournament in the series. Competitors who did not play in the previous tournament will be allocated an appropriate position based on any other “Age Group Singles” results and the most recent “seeding” list. The initial matches in EACH DIVISION will be 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 with the four winners then forming a “winners pool” to play for places 1 to 4 and the four losers forming a “losers pool” to play for places 5 to 8. Every competitor, as far as possible, should have 4 matches. Under 13/14 and Under 15/16 LEVEL DOUBLES: These are also non knock-out but players are not put into divisions. They will start in pool matches ending in elimination rounds for all players with the first two in each pool going to the A knockout and the rest going to a B knockout. All players should have at least four matches, if not more, depending on the number of entries. Under 13/14 and Under 15/16 MIXED DOUBLES: These are played in the same way as the level doubles events above. National Championships Entry to either the Primary or Secondary National Championships is by qualifying through the local “Area Qualifying Tournament”, with each Area being allocated places based on the number of affiliated schools in the Area. Pupils may apply for direct entry only if their Area does not organise an “Area Qualifying Tournament”. The Primary Championships are for any pupil attending a Primary school. The Secondary Championships are for pupils born in 1998 or later, in 1996 or later and in 1993 or later. In both Primary and Secondary Championships, pairings for all doubles events must be from the same school.

Inter-Area Tournaments These are “team” competitions for Area teams of 4/5 boys and 4/5 girls. They are held for Primary; for Junior (Under 14), Intermediate (Under 16) and Senior (Under 19). Competitors may play in only one Inter Area competition per season, and only for their school area. A maximum of 2 players of each sex may play in the Senior Inter Area as well as their own age group.

Quaich Competitions These are competitions for school teams of 4/5 boys and 4/5 girls. Areas run competitions to find their local champions who then go forward to the national finals to find the “top school” in Scotland. There are competitions for Primary; for Junior (Under 14) and Open (Under 19) with players again allowed to play in only one Quaich competition per season.
