For over 25 years INTERIGHTS has played a leading role in promoting human rights through the use of international and comparative law. We have pursued this through strategic litigation, capacity building and providing information to lawyers, judges and civil society partners worldwide. The Equality Programme provides leadership on equality and non discrimination work, primarily strategic litigation before international and regional human rights courts.

Working with our current Lawyer on Equality, the Lawyer/Senior Lawyer will be responsible for leading INTERIGHTS’ considerable work on Equality before national and international human rights courts. This is a rewarding and challenging role, which involves providing legal advice and representation to victims, and submitting briefs of amicus curiae in strategically significant cases. Our Equality programme works across grounds of discrimination, including taking cases on behalf of women, persons with disabilities, and lesbian, gay and transgendered persons.

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of international and comparative human rights law, a sophisticated understanding of equality law, substantial litigation experience, and a demonstrated ability to use law as a tool to promote human rights. Strong oral and written communication skills in English are essential. Fluency in French, Arabic or Russian is desirable. Occasional international travel will be required.

Depending on the skills and experience of the successful candidate, the position may be filled at either a Lawyer or a Senior Lawyer level. The salary is competitive in accordance with skills and experience, starting at £36,502 per annum, or £42,945 respectively.

Job Title: Lawyer or Senior Lawyer, Equality Programme

Responsible to: Legal Practice Director

Responsible for: Interns and volunteers

Overall purpose: With the other lawyer on the Equality Programme and regional lawyers, to develop and implement INTERIGHTS’ programme of work on Equality, strengthening international standards through strategic litigation and other means of intervention.

Responsibilities:

. taking a lead role in defining and developing the overall focus of INTERIGHTS’ work in this field

. providing legal advice and assistance relating to international and comparative equality standards to lawyers, NGOs and others worldwide

. assisting applicants and representatives before domestic courts, including the European Court of Human Rights, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the UN treaty bodies in strategically significant equality cases

. submitting briefs of amicus curiae to international and regional courts and tribunals, and to national courts as appropriate

. providing expertise at internal and external training workshops on international and comparative equality law

. disseminating legal information on these issues through publications, the worldwide web and other means

. supporting INTERIGHTS’ other regional and thematic programmes in their equality work; providing them with advice and resources on these issues as they arise

. recruiting and supervising interns and volunteers PERSON SPECIFICATION: Lawyer or Senior Lawyer, Equality Programme

Essential:  Law degree (or another degree with post graduate diploma in law)  Admitted to legal practice (not necessarily in the United Kingdom)  Substantial experience working in the human rights sector  Excellent understanding of, and significant experience of working on equality and non discrimination issues  Sophisticated understanding of international and comparative human rights law and mechanisms  Demonstrated experience in using regional and international human rights instruments such as the European Convention on Human Rights  Fluency in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills  Ability to deal with time pressure and a demanding work environment, working both independently and with others  Pleasant, diplomatic manner and disposition in interacting with management, colleagues at all levels, partners and clients  Integrity, professional discretion and ability to handle confidential matters  Commitment to equal opportunities and sensitivity to working in a multicultural environment  Willingness and ability to travel as required

 For Senior Lawyer post, substantial litigation experience using regional and international human rights mechanisms  For Senior Lawyer post, an ability to operate at a strategic level and to recognise the wider political context within which the protection of human rights operates

Desirable:  Graduate degree in public international law or international human rights law  Recognised speciality in a thematic area of equality, in particular in the area of women’s human rights, the rights of persons with disabilities or LGBT persons  Experience in living and working on human rights in one of the regions in which INTERIGHTS works  Experience working with the European legal system  Knowledge of and established relationships with domestic, regional or international human rights NGOs and other human rights actors  Demonstrated innovative and creative approach to law  Experience in designing and delivering training workshops  Ability to work in the French, Russian or Arabic languages
